Multi-challenged living room TV wall
Comments (11)Hi Caroline, wow, that is a challenging space! When are you doing your "four seasons" room? I'm just wondering because it seems like the things you want and your DH has agreed to are a fairly large undertaking, in time, expense, and big furniture that might be difficult to repurpose. What will this space become when you have the new TV/company space? Also, if I may ask, what region of the country do you live in? I agree with you about not wanting the open storage. The picture you posted with those open shelves is my least favorite, although I realize you were really looking at the bottom cabinets. The wood against that green wall in that picture is unattractive, in my personal opinion. Also, it's really, really hard to pull off open shelving or even open bookshelves unless you're super organized and have some very nice things to display; otherwise it just looks messy and cluttered. The white unit is by far my favorite, because it looks the least "heavy." I know your DH wants hickory, but, and this is just my personal opinion, a long room like that with wood floors and then a massive wood wall structure just looks very unbalanced to me. The hugeness of the entertainment center and TV just completely dominate the room. The white one lightens up the whole room and just automatically looks cleaner and not like a mess. I would hope that you're not planning to completely fill every inch of shelf space; if you can balance the space on either side of the TV, that would be nice. My understanding is that you want the bottom cabinets to hold over-sized photo albums and photography equipment? That seems like a great idea! I think the whole concept is solid. I would just urge you to think about lighter colors, and using white areas, i.e. not filling all the space, giving it a light, airy look to counter balance the room both spatially and color wise and not make one end "wood heavy." Also, think about what you want that room to be when it's no longer the TV lounge. Maybe a kind of library/quiet space/conversation room? Perhaps where the TV was you could do a small gallery wall-or one big work of art, with a few smaller framed pieces on the shelves, breaking up the space between the stacks. Just some thoughts....See MoreHelp with furniture layout in big living room with some challenges
Comments (12)Hmm... I was going to suggest a more substantial sofa, but now that I see it would block the fireplace if you did that. I also think your couch adds a lovely bit of color. But I love the new couch you're considering, actually almost put it in my home. So it certainly wouldn't be a bad choice. Every good MCM living room begs for some leather, but I think youd be better served adding it as a bench under the window, or in the chaise. I would keep the same chair for the second, since you will already have a mismatch between couch, chairs, and corner chaise. That's obviously a beautiful console but you'll need to measure carefully. It looks pretty long at 80"- how long is your wall? You also don't want anything more than a few inches taller than your chaise. I would pick the chaise first and the console second so you can get the dimensions right. Here are some options for a bench for under the window, and a leather chair/chaise for the corner....See MoreDesign Dilemma--Lighting Challenge in Living Room
Comments (3)I would align the seating with the fireplace. Pull the right side sofa forward and "L" the one by the window with it so it faces the FP. Center the coffee table and the sofa facing the FP. Now your wall outlets are available. Get a matching pair of or console or sofa tables. Use one at the window and the other behind the sofa that faces the windows. The one at the windows can be topped with a pair of lamps. The one that is seen when you enter can be decorated with a pretty floral arrangement. You obviously have electric in the cabinet to the right, so I would tap into that to light that one up with LEDs. What about the one on the left? Does it have an outlet in it? You might have an electrician tap into one of the outlets at the window to bring power to that cabinet so it lights up too. The outlet at the corner post would be good for an uplight that sits under a plant and throws the shadows of the leaves upward onto the wall...See MoreChallenging living room arrangement
Comments (8)You have to do what works for the way you live. Some comments would be: What happens if you have some people over-where would they sit? What’s the direction of the sun coming in the window-would it be in your face? Would it make you uncomfortable sitting on the sofa? It’s not a good idea to have your tv in front of a heating source. You have no room for ambient lighting. When you have so little space to start with and with having the living area at that end, it leaves you with so much wasted space. Just look at your plan now. I understand about the comment of carrying food to the table. I have a small round table in my kitchen, so I don’t have room for serving bowls. I plate everything in the kitchen and in my case, I am only carrying two plates to the table. So if it were me, I’d make the adjustment. And one last floor plan: create a “lounge” area by the window, if you got a round coffee that that adjusts in height to a dining table, you could eat there as well or it could be a hobby/craft or gaming table. Tv would be wall mounted over kitchen table and sofa opposite. And you may want to consider a graphic wallcovering for that huge blank wall. Enjoy your new place!...See MoreBetty Wasserman Art & Interiors
