Hot Water Pressure is Low, Cold Water Pressure is Good. Why?

Hi guys,

We finished remodeling my house and now the water pressure for hot water is low. Surprisingly the cold water has good pressure. The shower head is new, Kitchen faucet is new, Toilet faucet is existing - but three of them have the same issue. So it can not be debris blocking the holes in the shower head. I am not sure what is wrong with it. What can it be? How can I investigate the culprit?

Do you have only one water heater? How many if any faucets have normal pressure? Did you turn hot water off at heater any time during remodel?

Hi @klem1,

Yeah I have only 1 water heater. All the 3 faucets are connected to the same water heater. We disconnected the water heater (disconnected incoming pipe, out-going pipe, electrical) during the remodel. Then after the remodel, we connected it back (all water pipes and electrical). Can the issue be electrical? Because it used to be connected to an old electric panel and now the contractor connected it to a new panel and I'm not sure if he did a good job.

Make sure all the valves are fully open. Scale can break loose in a water heater and partially obstruct any valves in the line, but the small stop valves under the sink are especially prone. That is one of the reasons I prefer ball valves for stops that are not visible.

Hello, I did check the water heater setting a couple of weeks ago and it was above the normal setting so I dialed it back to the NORMAL position. Weeks later my shower head pressure is still the same and the water temp is still hot when the handle is in the middle?? The pressure increases when I turn it to cold. Any ideas? Plumbers are too expensive and I would like to avoid one if at all possible. I forgot to add that I do hear a clicking sound when the handle is in the middle or hotter....don't think it means much but thought I throw this in. thanks

"I get this behavior on all hot water lines. What floater or heat expansion are you talking about?" By "floater" I mean something that's suspended in the HW tank and is drawn toward the outlet when the water flows. The water would flow freely at first but when this obstruction is drawn to the outlet it would diminish. By "heat expansion" I mean some portion of the outflow plumbing that expands as the hot water begins flowing through it thereby coming to restrict the flow as it enlarges. From your description, I'm suspecting something involving one of the other of these is at work. Since you say the behavior didn't happen until the new tank went in, I'm thinking whatever it is must be associated with that new install. Like Chris Davis, I, too, would be interested in learning whether or not you also get low-flow on the cold water lines when this happens with your hot-water lines. That would tell you a lot. From the time you turn on the hot water, how long does it take for the flow to diminish? Is it about the same amount of time each time? If you then turn it off for a minute or so and turn it back on, is it still diminished or is full flow back again? This is interesting.

Haven’t called a plumber yet and resistant. Had a leak around a vent pipe last winter. Called a handyman to fix it and paid him 350 bucks and he didn’t fix it. Called a plumber and they said they fixed bit and charged me 600 and no one fixed the problem. I was hoping to troubleshoot the problem first before calling someone.

Electrical will not effect water pressure (unless there's a pump involved). Here's some possabilities. Trash might of been stired up and plugged all 3 facuet airators remove one or more to see if pressure returns. IF there's a backflow valve or pressure regulation valve in the hot water pipe,that could be stuck. IF you turned water supply to heater off at a valve that controls hot but not cold water,the was,her inside may have cracked or come loose or "gate"might have dropped(come loose)on gate valve. See if valve still turn's hot water completely off and on. If it doesn't,turn off water at main or meter then dis-assemble valve for inspection. If you only turned water off at main or meter,disregard above. Let us know what you find.

We checked the pipes and all the pipes were copper. I'm happy up until now that the pipes are not galvanized.

So now it's means it was not build-up on the interior of the pipe that was narrowing down the pipe to that extent.

We opened all the faucets and the shower valve. All of them had a lot of Sand and pieces of sheetrock. We cleaned it up and tried it and it works lie a charm. Both kitchen and bathroom faucets have equal pressure on hot and cold water. The bathroom has some slight difference, but I can live with it.

The contractor was not careful as he did not cover the pipes during construction nor spend sometime to clean it up after construction. This is a good lesson learned.
