Appliances Design Dilemma Kitchens

**correction. can black and slate appliances be mixed?

I just bought an older home that has been remodeled. They already installed a GE Slate stove* and dishwasher. but not a fridge. I really don't love the slate, but can't afford to change all the appliances. Can I mix a black matte or black SS fridge with the slate? Here are photos below of what I'm working with

Why not consider using SS? It will match back to your hood instead of adding another finish.

Don't even consider black. That really won't work. Are you sure the finish of the range is slate? There's lots of new blackish finishes.

You do have a stainless hood.

Your bigger problem is that your opening is set up for a counter depth fridge. Did you plan to purchase a counter depth fridge?

I don't have photos either but I prefer the mix, rather than all SS. I have a Viking dual fuel range and when it came time to replace my fridge, the salesman suggested a black one due to the constant upkeep involved in wiping fingerprints. Sounded like a good idea so I went for it, no regrets. Last year I needed to replace my dishwasher so I found a great buy on a black Bosch. My microwave is mostly SS, w/ somewhat of a black look from the glass front. In my mind it all works! I am getting ready to do a renovation and will be keeping all of the appliances.

Just be aware, Uba Tuba is green, not black. It's really dark, but it's green. I think the stainless fridge will look fine with the black oven if it works with your overall design scheme. A fridge stands there by itself, and is tall and wide. It has a different presence than an oven, so it's easy to make it a different color. Which is probably why you thought of it!

Here is the photo of the kitchen before we moved in. The fridge in the photos is not the one that is there now. We put a 36" counter depth with wood paneling and the exposed compressor grill on top there now. In front on the right of the swing doors is the bar with full counter and pass through window. In a couple of years, we'll replace the counters, cabinets and floors. I forgot to say the floors are not the reddish/pink tint. It's a slight multi dirt brown and yeah. What can I say. Another chapter for another day with the floors. LOL. We have a lot of other priorities to fix and update that are rather costly and can't be ignored. I know a lot of people don't like the Black Stainless Steel but I love it. So the question remains, can we get away with a black dishwasher (to replace current one) and ice maker that will match the lower cabinets when they are painted black if we can't find the matching wood panels for them? Thanks all!

I think you can definitely mix them. However, I wouldn't mix them on the same wall. For example, if your fridge and your range are on one wall in black stainless, you could add a regular stainless DW and microwave in the island. If you're going this route, carry the mixed metal idea through to your faucets, hardware, and lighting, too. Lots of great photos on this site with mixed metal finishes in kitchens. All that said, I wouldn't do this if you're planning to sell the house in a few years. If it's a look you love and you will be in your home for many years to come, go for it.

Get a counter depth stainless fridge. I wouldn't call that a "problem" unless you have ten kids: )

Stainless steel for the fridge would work best. If instead you put in another black appliance, plus that dark backsplash, plus that it's a fridge so has that more monolith look, it's just too much black. Stainless steel would work well, especially since you have the stainless steel hood right there, so there is some cohesion.

Maybe it’s the perspective but I’d be worried that the fridge opening isn’t as tall as today’s standard fridges. Many are 72” though you can still get 70. Based on the hood height it seems shorter that 70 to me.

Black SS is horrible, it's just a finish that easily scratches off not to mention it will be a black light sucking hole in the space. A counter depth SS fridge will be your best bet.

Height: 71”, width 35.75”.

Okay black is off the table haha. Just to clarify, SS would look better than slate, correct? Also if anyone wants to recommend their favorite brand of fridges I’m all ears for that too :)

Counter depth plain old stainless it will be fine as there is quite a lot of stainless with that stove,

Well, yeah, it can be mixed. You could also mix it with some old Avocado green ... but I wouldn't.

Stainless is the LONG TERM choice. It's gonna work with the hood just fine too.

Yes to stainless. Regarding brands, just shop for one with features and price that work for you. Love/hate reviews on brands are all over the map.

All of the appliances in my kitchen are slate, except for the dishwasher, which is stainless steel. They look fine together, in my opinion. The handles/knobs on the slate appliances are SS, so that helps.

Yes, SS would look better than slate. There are SO MANY ss refrigerators out there, start by identifying the main features you want (side-by-side? french door? water/ice in door? counter-depth?) and then start browsing at your local appliance store. You can spend a fortune on crazy features these days (want a fridge with a wifi camera in it so you can check the contents from the grocery store? It's out there.) Or you can get a nice basic fridge. It all depends on your needs, wants, and budget.

Shanae, what fridge did you end up going with? Could you post a picture. I also have a slate range and dishwasher and I'm now shopping for a refrigerator.
