Comments (12)Because it's so symmetrical I think garden layouts will be easier. It looks like, as Yardvark said, you could rip out the overgrown bushes flanking the doorway, replace with something smaller, and trim/shape the rest to see how it looks as a start. There are some healthy ilex or something in the middle which could be attractive. Do you know what is on the left? Oakleaf hydrangea? Your local garden center could suggest plants and shrubs that will do well in your climate. Is there room to add a larger tree as a focal point in the yard off the right corner? Either a full-sized shade tree or a 25-30 foot flowering tree? I know some people hate the idea of painted brick, but this seems like a good candidate for the white brick-black trim look. It's stylish now, but I think it will also stand the test of time. There are some new products for painting brick that don't peel. Comments (2)We tried power washing with little improvement. There was water, which led to mildew and moss, which is gone now. What’s left are stains from that (I called them water stains for simplicity’s sake). Not sure if we’ll be able to get them off or not....See MoreExterior Home/Landscaping Help!
Comments (5)I agree that the landscaping near the house is too tall for that area. Take all of those out and transplant to a different area. I would go to a big nursery that has a landscape designer and ask him/her for a recommendation of shrubs that won't get too tall. (Show that person a photo.) A general rule of thumb once the shrubs get bigger is to keep them pruned underneath the windowsill. You'll want something evergreen and if you have deer, something they won't' eat. I happen to like shutters. You can order vinyl ones online and you'll never have to repaint them. Just make sure you get the right size. The door could be a different color but black would be nice too....See MoreFront porch and landscaping help
Comments (11)Don't feel overwhelmed it will all come together in time, just plan for the phases of change you want to make. I would suggest the base of the house be painted closer to brick color. Choose the color for your window trim to compliment with the front door (not sure what color it is) or the brown roof. Create more of a landing at the bottom of the steps with square stone tiles, and adjust the gutter there so it runs to side instead of toward the front in way of porch. Some nice flower shrubs running along the front of porch will set it off nicely. Good luck!! PS - not sure what's going on at the home on the left, really looks different over there! Ha!...See MoreYardvaark
