Comments (8)It's a lot of thick, heavy wood. I think just keeping the crown and the door molding would be enough. for the baseboards/window trim, give it all a good sanding, ending w/a 220 grit. wipe it well to remove dust. prime w/something like Zinsser oil base primer, OR, you can use a good shellac. (shellac seals the wood so if anyone down the road wants to strip the paint off, the wood will remain unscathed under the shellac) after primer, you'll prob want to fine sand w/220 or 320 just to knock down any nubs. wipe clean. now paint w/a good wood trim paint. I like Advance from BM, or SW ProbClassic. use the white base right out of the can. it's very neutral w/no undertones. (or try Pure White or Simply White) As for gray on the walls, your wood is warm, w/reddish tones. you'd have to pick the right gray. But I think a white, or a soft blue or soft sage (blue or sage looks beautiful w/cherry wood) would look great....See MoreDutch Colonial - exterior help needed
Comments (7)I would get a new front door and lantern lights 1/3 of its height (add matching lights flanking the garage door instead of the motion spot,) add a walk out to the front curb, close up the windows on the garage door, and improve the landscaping with curved beds flanking the asphalt and walk. You should consider painting the dormers to match the roof shingles and recede. They are the first thing I saw, then the garage, and last your front door. That's backwards....See MoreWhat Style is This Roof — Besides Awful
Comments (21)Fixing the overly-busy area around the left side windows will make a big difference, and so will landscaping. One of the reasons that your eye is focused on the left side of the house is there are too many finishes and different coloured details. There is also no landscaping to draw the eye across the house to the right side. If those 2 things are improved, the house will be more balanced and the roof line will not be the thing that holds your attention. Changing the roof line will be relatively expensive and you will get a much better bang for your buck elsewhere. And the house still won't look good if you only change the roof line. Just paint the side pieces the same as the rest of the shingled area and they will virtually disappear. I like that your house has a little personality and isn't a cookie cutter. If siding and brick are the same colour, you could achieve an attractive result like this....See MoreDutch colonial Reno ideas wanted!
Comments (9)Start searching for "modernized Dutch colonial." Here's one I found. Is this what you had in mind? This one has pergola and portico across the front, plus larger windows, plus front dormer windows. Maybe just pergoa and portico? Calling an architect! Changing a major architectural feature is going to require an architect and a big budget. Some have a row of dormer windows across front roof to break up the roof--less costly than above but still major. If you're going to take that on, then wait on the siding. Maybe larger windows would help. Go online and look at a lot of Dutch colonials to see if they have larger windows. In the meantime, take down the shutters. Paint the front door a new color you like that harmonizes with the cinammon roof since that takes up so much visual space. Ditto the double garage doors--same color as roof for now. Very often great landscaping can direct the eye to the foreground while a tree or an island with a tree can camouflage a façade that is less than appealing to the owner. Lawn island and downstairs with larger windows:...See Morejck910
