Seed Exchange for Zones 9, 8 (maybe lower/higher)
Comments (2)We added one more member to our swap leaving one space open. If you wonder why I like Geoseed so much, I will give you an example (this is random, but they all seem like this.) Example: the new disease resistant Nicotiana - Whispers. Can hardly find it because it is so new. I found it on the web at a major site which has it at $3.25 for 50 seeds, a fair price. Geoseed sells it for $4.40 for 500 seeds. They deal with large pacs because they sell to growers and repackagers. I don't need that many seeds so I am doing the 4 person swap. (incidentally, like I said, this is a random example, I didn't get this seed, but it is typical.) Another thing is that their seeds germinated the very best for me this year. And their order taking people are great....See MoreHigh Ceilings = Higher Energy Bills?
Comments (18)I strongly advise you to use Low E windows. We're sitting out in the middle of an open meadow south-facing in North Carolina. We did passive solar to help with the winter (sun is at an angle) heating and the sun warms the stone front porch and radiates through all the single French doors on the porch (5). The dormer windows above the porch allow the winter sun to warm the core of the house. Our HVAC is dual-fuel. It's a heat pack until the temps drop below 38 degrees, then it's natural gas. In the summer (sun is straight up overhead), the 8 ft deep front porch keeps the front of the house shaded. The dormer windows don't get the sun at that angle. We minimized windows on the west side and put our garage there to help insulate the house. We have trees on the north side and the ones on the west don't help in the summer until 5:00pm. You've really got to watch out for the heat from the west in our area and I assume you'll have the same situation down there. We keep our A/C on 74 degrees on both floors all summer long and we get cold! I think my husband said our electric bill was $125 last time with 95-100 degree weather. Here's a photo to visualize the layout for passive....See Moreadvice on raising an 8' ceiling to a tray ceiling of 9'6"?
Comments (10)It depends on a lot of factors including labor costs in your area and the whole approach. In a relatively straightforward case, for a 25x30 living dining room situation, we can assume that it is not more than half the house, that it is a gabled roof, that there is attic space above the room, that the electrical work is straightforward, there isn’t a air conditioning unit or ceiling mounted HVAC above the space, we are looking at about $10000 including the permits, engineering, and general contracting to manage the project. As you can see there are a lot of things that are site specific to determine pricing and that the only way to get an estimate is to bring someone in to see your specific situation and to be open to options presented....See MoreDo linear suspension fixtures work with higher ceilings?
Comments (1)If I understand you, what you are saying, "a linear suspension" is a pendant light....to center over your dining table? If so then this fixture is too small. The pendant over the dining table should have a long enough stem for the bottom of the fixture to hang 36" or 3'-0" above the dining table. Also the diameter for a table the size you describe should be larger, at least 24" minimum to be an appropriate scale and great light spread....See Morecpartist
