How to update this 80's ranch with midcentury modern style.
Comments (14)That bow window is a significant challenge because the masonry follows the curve. I would remove the whole wall and replace with a huge window that follows the line of the roof. I also removed shutters and opened that front gable, replaced doors and garage doors with wood, replaced exterior sconces, enlarged the stoop and poured a walkway to the drive, painted the side door casing and downspouts to match the siding so they disappear. Sorry I didn't have time to find a better place for the garbage cans....See MoreHelp! Need to update 80's ranch style house with dated stone exterior
Comments (19)I am no landscaping expert, but even something like this makes your entry more important. I'm sure that someone else will have some better ideas on how to improve this area and make it more welcoming. OK just saw the entrance image. Are we going for a contemporary home or an olde tyme cottage home?????? Have their been some changes to the original building?? The reason I ask is that I was getting ready to propose a contemporary garage door to go with your boulder stones. Which was do you want to go???...See MoreUpdating late 80s ranch
Comments (9)@Patricia Colwell I love MCM but I don’t think I’m brave enough to embrace that for my home, as my interior style leans very much transitional with an attempt to avoid the latest trends. @er612 thank you so much for the visuals, they’re extremely helpful. I like the lighter options best. @tangerinedoor I see what you mean. While I do love the dark options, as they’re very current, I’m leaning toward the lighter shades. I’ll pick up a couple samples of light gray to see if it will work with the brick. The photo doesn’t accurately reflect the roof color, driftwood has some sage green in it. While sage green isn’t necessarily in the brick, i’m now wondering if that might work. That said, gray would offer more flexibility. Thank you to all of you, this has been tremendously helpful....See MoreExterior Update - Gables on an 80's Brick Ranch

Part of the charm of your house is how it rambles and sprawls a bit, and the eye travels to take it all in, so I would be wary of drawing sharp accentuating dark lines on it. Definitely don't cut down those amazing trees, they make the house look modest, unpretentious and tied to nature, which another part of the charm of the house. Don't get shutters if you don't want them but if you ever feel they'd be an asset, functional ones would be the way to go. Yes, they would be irregular (on some of the windows I would only do one shutter on one side) but maybe you'd never, so.... I think the vast expanse of lawn is very nice for your house. I could see bluebells and wildflowers scattered throughout it, and a low key field of something at the right eide of the house, maybe something along the pathway to the garage (does that get any sun?) Ornmentals and foundation plants might compromise the relaxed simplicity of the scene and suburbanize the look You have a house under the trees in a lake of green.... Might be nice to define the driveway-end of the walk to the front door with a very simple lantern/post marker....See Morekitasei
