Plywood or no for roof replacement?

Hello all. So far we've gotten two estimates for a roof replacement of our 70-yo home. The roof has the original 1x8, 3/4" wood sheathing. (From the attic, 1/4"-plus gaps are visible between the boards, as well as some chipping from nails from replacement 19 years ago.) One estimator would remove the old shingles and cover the existing boards with plywood, attaching it to the rafters, before shingling. (This adds approximately $2-3k to the total cost.) The other estimator would remove the old shingles and shingle over the old boards as was done 19 years ago. I asked if plywood was necessary and if there would be a problem down the road with leaking through the nail holes because of splintering, and they said "no." I've read differently. Would going with no plywood, but having 50-yr architectural shingles, better protect from potential leaks? Or is the plywood a must? Thank you for your thoughts!
