Please help: Chandelier over a dining room table
Comments (2)Hi Jillsp- I think you should be fine. Yes, the common rule of thumb is to determine the diameter or width of the table top and select a lighting piece that is half of that measurement (the diameter of the table top). Your fixture size should not be determined by the size of the room at all, but the size of the table it is over. If your chandelier is not too heavy, my advice is to have someone hold the light over the table while you take a step back and simply use your own judgment and decide if you like the way it looks. There are two schools of thought here because in general, design is about personal taste and opinion....See MoreCan I combine two rooms into one large dining room?
Comments (14)Can you post a rough sketch (straight lines are not required!) of this floor of your home so we can see how they relate to each other? If you can note each rooms wall lengths and door and window locations, I'm betting there's a good solution out there that we just haven't come up with yet because we still don't have a very good feel for the existing layout. It's really too hard to get a complete idea with just photos. It would also help If you let us know your budget. That will help us know if we can dream big, or we need to keep to modest changes. One of the first thoughts I have, even without seeing your floorpan, is maybe you could split up the room next to the in-law suite (your current dining room I think?) so that part of it combines with the in-law suite to make that a little bigger, and part of it combines with that little extra room that's really just a hallway and plant area now, so that it makes the dining room bigger. (Again this is all based on whether or not I'm understanding which room is which, but I hope you are understanding my idea.) Now, it would be more expensive than just tearing down one wall, because you would be tearing down two walls and building a third, but maybe that would make the perfect size dining space, and you'd have a little bit bigger in-law suite as well. That could be a win-win. And now, you or others can say that can't possibly work because of this or that, (or maybe it does) and someone else has an idea, and so on. So please give us a rough sketch. That could be just the thing for someone to come up with a brilliant idea....See MoreTwo pendants over long dining table - size advice
Comments (12)I'd say your current one is too wide. since you have lower ceilings, I'd go for something a bit smaller. General rule is 30" apart. If you like the 29" size, that's your call, but I'd do something at least a 1/3 smaller (than the current one) here is the one style you mentioned. However, what is the style of your dining room? right now, I don't see anything in there that would compliment this modern style of lighting. Your table is somewhat generic, the chairs I don't even know, the family style bench and whatever those two console things are hanging out in the vicinity! Lets get an idea of the look you're going for first, then decide on your pendants. I like his lights in a room done like this: (this would work well for your table) or, how about his linear light fixture? takes the measuring work out of your hands I really like this look w/the dark wall, white cabs, simple chairs, dark table. I like this one too if you prefer to have the larger pendants not a fan of the over-sized. But if you like it, here's how you do it! some other visuals...See MoreHow to hang double chandeliers over dining room table?
Comments (3)Hi Hannah! First of all, thanks for that drawing--helps me visualize the situation. We actually have recommendations for how to hang 2 chandeliers over a long table. The best way to do it is to imagine cutting the table in half and then centering each of the chandeliers over their half of the table. Your chandelier sizes will work, too, based on our sizing recommendations. Let me know if you have any questions!...See Moreredsilver
