Ideas for small area off back patio for fire pit.
Comments (10)on_greenthumb, your firepit area is lovely. I really like that. I love the idea of a rubble patio, and perhaps can use that as the center of ours (which we hope to put in late summer or early fall). However it has to be flat (unlike my walkway of broken concrete: each source comes with a different thickness) for my Mom and my pal (who is blind) to navigate more easily than the front walk (which I will need to get laid flatter, eventually). I think if you plan on using really heavily weighted items like a stone fireplace, grill island, sink etc. you need at least some of the area poured. We plan on having a "primitive" kitchen (mostly cement items) around the edges, so we need stability: we also need a footer for a knee wall around the edge to keep any flooding waters off the patio and kitchen area. That said, I really want to keep things as do-it-yourself as possible. I have fun doing projects like hosenemesis patio area - and enjoy the feeling of a job well accomplished! on_greenthumb's area would be a nice "landing" for a hammock. Comments (25)Petrushka and Silvia, thank you so much. I'm as shocked as anyone, because most things I make turn into scraps. Or as my mother used to say, "I spend the day making rags", LOL! The shades did their job yesterday. I was working in the back yard in the afternoon and I couldn't stop smiling because I'm so happy it actually works. Petrushka, if you go to the link in my very first post, it will lead you to the blog with the original (my inspiration) and the instructions. I used screw eyes (some people call them eye bolts but they are not bolts, they are screws) in the frames. I used screw hooks in the ceiling. Right now, the screw eyes are placed directly into the hooks. I did buy sisal rope to use between. The plan was to make some fancy knots and I may still do that... but it may take me awhile to get six sets of fancy rope knots made. :) I used a single piece of fence, 6' x 16', sold for around $25 at Lowes and Home Depot, and cut it into three pieces. Then I trimmed the sides of each piece of fence to fit the boards. The top boards are 1x4s and I have 1x2s for trim at the bottom. I still may attach the bottom boards for a more finished look. Comments (27)Wine storage over a fridge is not really recommended because of heat and vibration. Unless you go through it fast, I have heard you will be making wine vinegar. I think the doorstyle is perfect. I have the Sub-Zero 27" and you will get a ton of storage in it in a small space. I don't think the cabinets really look too tall in the elevation, and elevation drawings tend to "stretch" the verticals a bit. You could shorten the cabinets and increase the crown a bit, if that's your preference. Since this is a tight NYC kitchen, it has a great window, and it is not eat in, I think you need to allow storage to trump esthetics, at least a little. You will be looking Through the room to the window. Have you thought of doing drawers instead of doors on some of the bases? Its a trade off in a narrow kitchen, but it would probably be easier to stand to one side and open the drawer than bend over and hit your tailbone on the opposite cabinets. Comments (17)Gevork, my sis lives in carlsbad and has a small backyard. she packs a big punch w/a lot of foliage though. I'm posting it so you can see what's she's planted against her fence, and the type of hardscape and garden stuff she uses. Here's her front. (it's a rather small house) behind that fence is a nice patio/courtyard she does a lot of succulents, plumerias, ferns and a bazillion others! If you did succulents, like she's done here, they don't require a huge amount of tending. you have the perfect climate for them. add some hardscape like a path, rocks, pebbles, birdbath, fountain, plant a few fruit trees, or container plants. (there's a huge nursery she goes to in Escondido ) here's the back This one is mine. another option against your fence could be something easily done by you with a raised flower bed. 5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoBamboo wind chimes aren't that loud and sound more natural. I have a few birds and one tiki bamboo windchimes in different areas of the garden. I cant even hear them from inside the house or a far distance outside.
Bubblers from urns are easy to make. You could add a pond light in the bottom and it would look cool at night. Ive seen these fountains with metal leaves cascading down that trickle.
I was at Ace awhile back and they had some neat zen things...a little pricy to buy there but it gives good ideas lol..
