What is the Composition of Soil in Reno?

I would like to know what is the typical soil composition and drainage characteristics of soil in Reno. I am looking at the slopes of South Reno, near the Arrowcreek development. Then compare that against an area that gets into the treeline such as Montreux.

Looking at Arrowcreek, it looks like absolutely barren desert. It looks like nothing grows there natively except for shrubs. Trees appear to be unable to flourish there. Is that because the soil drains too fast and there is insufficient water during the summer? Or is the problem the opposite: that the soil is hardened and does not absorb much water at all? Why are trees able to grow near Montreux?

Is it possible to grow redwood or douglas fir trees in the soil at Arrowcreek? Would the amount of water required to sustain those trees in that kind of soil be prohibitive?
