I don't think consumer products targeted for high volume, mass-market appeal are necessarily made with quality or durability as a high priority. So many shoppers choose products by price that manufacturers seem to focus on achieving low price points by limiting costs of production. Quality suffers with that approach.

And I think that's also why for many product types, there have emerged "premium" and much more expensive brands that do emphasize higher quality. These are successful too. So just as the ones who aim to sell their products at high volumes in discount stores, the ones that aim up-market with higher price points also find eager customers.

I had a single serve Keurig for company. I never used it for myself. So, over 2 years it may have made 200 cups? Then nothing. Boo! Never again.

I've had many, at least five, over the years. None ever failed. I have one now for 6 years and I use it daily.

Maybe the newer ones are made more cheaply, I have no idea. They have always worked beautifully, never broke. We moved a lot over the last 6 years and I would give them away and buy a new one.

But Jane, wouldn't it be safe to say that you didn't own them long enough for them to fail? A lot of us want to buy something and have it last for several years. We have had our cheap coffee pot for several years. The one before, identical, just started wearing out but still worked. I think it was at least 10 years old and cost about $20.

Probably one problem with the Keurig style coffee maker is that it has a lot of parts to fail. In a basic drip pot, there's not a lot to go wrong.

I gave DH one for Christmas 7 or 8 years ago. I got the office type after reading reviews that they were built for heavy volume and lasted longer. It started to leak after almost a year. I called them and they sent a new one at no charge. This one has gone strong every since. He makes maybe 3 cups a day, unless we have company, then it gets heavier use. He also uses the re-fillable cups instead of throw away pods after the first cup of the day.

I've had mine at least six years and it's still going strong. You have to make sure to descale it, just like any other coffee machine. Sometimes there will be an air pocket that will stop the machine from working. Unplugging it for 24 hours usually fixes that. People think their machine has died, but it's usually a simple fix. Mine won't die (knock on wood) and when it does, I won't replace it: my very expensive KitchenAid is just a paper weight right now because the Keurig is just too convenient. I make a minimum 4 cups a day with my Keurig, and my husband usually one or two. On the weekends I make a lot more. I pretty much drink coffee all day.

I like the “idea,” but the coffee is DOA (dead on arrival — old and all the volatile fragrant high notes are long gone. The build quality is junky. Some landfills refuse to take any more. <——- well, I made this up, but it will be true someday.
