Window grids vs no grids

Hi all, we will be starting a huge home reno in a few months and need to make the decision to do windows with the built in grids or no grids. I am completely torn and have no idea what to choose. Any advice???

We are also starting a huge reno, I chose 3 windows with grids and the rest without. I wanted to bring attention to these windows in the kitchen and the grids will do just that. They are not visible from the street. Kind of like this

When we did our windows I did grids and I kinda regret them. They look cute on my house and do give it a bit of detail, but I wish I hadn't. Or maybe have only did grids on the top windows. Mine are between the glass so I'm stuck forever. I'm no help, lol.

It really depends on the style of your house.

I wouldn't go too light on the gray-something that matches the mid-tone gray stone. I like your wood door but if you change it out for fiberglass or steel, you can avoid a storm door altogether, which makes for a much cleaner look. At the very least, use a full lite storm door painted in the same color as the front door. It's going to be a fantastic project. I hope you'll keep us updated with progress pics!

You have a mix of styles and I would consider it transitional in style. No white windows for this house. You can use bronze or sandstone. The windows can still be white on the inside provided the windows you have selected are not vinyl.

Are you squaring off the upper centre window or keeping the arch? I like being able to look outside through an unobstructed window when I’m seated especially and I like the bit of gain of extra daylight. I’d consider two over one. Might work well to simplify because you have a lot of windows and shutters on the front face. Maybe houssaon will mock that one for you. The other thing to think about is your window coverings, blinds or plantation type shutters can add to the busy aspect and spoil a divided light window, looks like you use a pull down shade in the upper windows?

Depends on the house style, but most homes do not look good with grids. I say no grids.

I vote NO grids. I didn't pay too much attention to them in our new house when we were looking at it. I thought we could remove them but they were between the glass so I couldn't. They are only on the front of the house but I would have liked it better without them. Personal choice I guess.

Totally depends on house style. Grids can be a big plus with the right house IMO.

Imperative that windows/mullions jive with the architectural look of a building.

What did the house have originally? I'd go with that. Many vintage homes have divided light windows and to my eye look look silly when replaced with large, plain expanses of glass. More contemporary homes benefit from simplicity. Let the house tell you what's right.

+1 to the comments regarding the architecture of the home. Some look bad with grids, some look bad without. A pic of the home would be very helpful.

We built a cape cod style home. It called for grids. I don’t mind them, don’t really notice them anymore. Only problem is with my height I get that bar right in the middle.

We need to see the exterior of your house. Windows are an integral part of the overall design.

Any advice you receive, without a photo or description of the style of the house, is worthless.

IMO it does not matter the style of house I dislike grids in windows they intefere with window coverings, view and serve no purpose .

Here is a photo of the house now. Siding will be a blue/grey with no shutters and white casing all around the windows. I’m leaning towards grids on the top only but our contractor suggested considering prairie style (top only). Thoughts??

Hi Amanda, I like the idea of grids on top. Just personal opinion but I'm not a fan of the prairie style.

I don't like grids because they interfere with the view. Just personal preference. But I have grids on the front of our house because they were there when we bought it and are between the panes so I have to live with it. But they are only on the front of the house not on the windows I look out most.

I put in grids on top, on the front windows. I left the dining room window grid-less because the back deck door from there is also gridless, and I really think for me this works the best. View and all.

A lot will depend on house style.
