Why called "smooth" hydrangea?

Why is smooth hydrangea one of the common names of Hydrangea arborescens? I have Googled oodles of different terms and looked through many Hydrangea books to no avail! Am guessing there must be a botanical reference to a plant part? Taking bigleaf and oakleaf as examples, smooth certainly does not reference the leaves, because they aren't smooth. Anybody know the answer to this mystery?
