The Hosta at the Top of Your Want/Must-have lists for 2014?
Comments (55)Bkay, I sincerely hope you have a better year in terms of your health and your hostas. Glad to hear you are retiring! From what I remember reading here on the forum, you have continued to run a business far beyond your normal retirement...if I am recalling correctly. You are definitely due some R and R ... and entering this 2017 growing season with nothing but healthy hostas is a terrific start! Wish you much joy in your garden and am looking forward to seeing pictures of your remaining healthy, beautiful hostas again....and no doubt some new additions? ;-)...See MoreHeirlooms That Restaurants Use
Comments (11)The shoulders arent green because it contains the ug gene from one of the contributing parents. This particular parent used in the crossing scheme also contains the crimson gene (more red/higher lycopene) and several other useful genes (called Parent A below). The black comes from Cherokee Purple, Black Cherry and Gary O Sena in the parentage background. It picks up attributes of those flavors but is more tart in this F1 due to the contribution of the other parent. I expect that to segregate out some in later generations. This is from a cross of a hybrid x hybrid so the other offspring was different. The basic scheme was this: (black/flavor Parent B x Parent A) X (black/flavor Parent C x Parent A) Here is a sister line that happened to segregate for the crimson gene. It's a little hard to tell in this picture but the interior of this fruit is more "red" than most tomatoes. It's flavor is slightly sweeter than the black sibling. It's avg brix was 5.9 and the black's was 5.5°. The reflected light is messing with the intensity of red but look how deep red the gel is Having worked on the produce market for several years, I know that some restaurants do not want to order/buy everyday and need something that holds a little longer. Some do not want soft tomatoes because they will not work well in the slicing machines or may even fall apart in presentation. Some market farmers also need this trait so that fruit can be picked early when its ready and hold till the weekend when sold. I think what has happened is that with the introduction of lines like 'Florida MH-1' years ago that selection for the firmness trait has gone to the extreme based on the system and methods in place with little or no emphasis on flavor. That seems to be changing some. That said 'Florida MH-1' may likely be somewhere in the distant background of the firmer parent....See MoreSay you had $100 gift check to use
Comments (58)I'd ask the po how he took care of it, or a furniture specialist. Wouldn't think putting anything on it would be a good idea. Just a very soft, lint free cloth that won't catch on or leave lint in the irregularities. You can also spritz the cloth, smushing any moisture around (just the slightest feel of dampness) to freshen a wood surface a bit and hold any dust stuff better. I'd check with someone first with this one though, and I'm not sure that's something to be done frequently. It's really not like putting water on it :) It's a Martha tip, too, and she was with a restorer :) (Think they were working with waxed pieces.) Maybe her website has the info. (I just wet my hands, rub them all over to remove some of the water, and then knead the cloth.)...See MoreTop 100 Country Songs (Part 2!)
Comments (150)Jimmie Rodgers....when I saw the date of that, I googled him because the Jimmie Rodgers I knew and loved ("Honeycomb", "Oh, Oh, I'm Falling in Love Again", etc.) wasn't even born in 1928. "My" Jimmie is listed as a pop singer, whereas the Jimmie Rodgers who did "Blue Yodel" was a country singer who died in 1933. FYI, the two are not related. Just a little Monday-morning trivia....See Moresushipup1
