Mini kitchen re-do pre full re-model.. help? (pics)
Comments (45)I just want to thank everyone for the help and advice. Dh and I have decided to go ahead with the full re-model. We won't be changing the layout but we are going to replace flooring, cabs and counters. I've decided NOT to use the maple slab from my barn. I'm going with granite all around. I REALLY want to remove the soffits but I took a peek today and there is duct work through out! I'm really having a hard time with this.. just looking at them makes me want to cry. I just don't know what to do to make them blend in. They aren't just typical soffits that are near flush with the cabs.. they come out almost 2 feet from the wall, and 10 inches from the cabinets. They also have some funny angles that might make crown molding around the cabinets look odd? I'm going to post over on the kitchen forums to try to get more feedback on the soffits. Thanks again.. you all helped me with the motivation to for the 'real' makeover!...See MoreRemodeling a "blah" kitchen... on a limited budget and timeline!
Comments (12)lovely home. is the kitchen an addition? it doesn't feel very 1920 bungalow... and that's a compliment. instead of painting paneling, pry a piece out carefully and see if you have drywall beneath it. it happens. if not, think about replacing the paneling with drywall . your cabinets are in that mostly timeless continuum, and pretty. congratulations on working with what you have. I suspect you have already pulled out the fake greenery. your ceiling fan is probably on a separate switch. delete it, and replace it with a simple ceiling fixture will suffice. if you don't light it up, no one will notice it. I'd live with the sink til I had a whole plan on counter, sink, and backsplash....See MoreHelp! $2000 Budget for Kitchen Remodel
Comments (50)You can make your money go twice as far if you learn some DIY skills, because you won't have to pay for labor. I'd suggest finding a set of used cabinets on your local CL and installing them. Golden oak are the most common, which isn't au courant, but will be better than diagonal fake-wood laminate. We just helped my DSS/DIL renovate a cheap old house, and they paid $400 for a set of cabinets that fit into their space (you have to get measurements of everything in the listing and then see if it fits), and just had to buy one upper and one pantry cabinet to fill it all in (golden oak cabinets are still in stock at the big box stores). They spray painted them with pewter spray paint (I had my doubts, but it turned out better than I expected) and will put stock laminate counters on them. Used appliances on CL as well (people are often selling whole packages of white/black as they're remodeling to SS). There may be some electrical or plumbing work, if you don't like the current layout....See MoreWhat to do with this kitchen on the cheap.
Comments (50)I think it looks nice- it's very deceptive against the existing color. They often say to paint white or prime the wall and then try out a color because you otherwise see it in context to the existing color....See Moretartanmeup
