Finished Kitchen pics - remodel on a budget
Comments (41)First of all, thanks so much for the kind comments! It really makes me feel happy that you can't tell it was done on a budget! I've gotten a couple of questions about how this is a budget remodel, so here's how I saved money and a brief price breakdown: Layout - didn't change anything. This is where I saved the most money. When we bought the house I had grand ideas about gutting and starting fresh, putting in double wall ovens, a prep sink in the island, etc....then reality struck and I realized I didn't have the money for that kind of overhaul unless I won the lottery. The layout isn't too terrible. No "work triangle" but overall it works. We kept everything in place. No changes in appliances, plumbing, etc. Cabinets - didn't change them out. Kept old 1989 cabinets and had them painted. I did have professional painters do it, they came in, took off the cabinet doors, drawer fronts and garage door and took them back to their shop and sprayed them in BM Decorator's White. It cost about $1000 to have them do this and come in and paint the side panels in place. Countertops- tropical brown granite - total cost was $4300 installed and that included the stainless undermount sink and tearing out the old counters. That was my big splurge, but it was still cheaper than most of the other granite colors. I figured if I splurged on the countertops it would make the rest of the kitchen look a little more elegant! I searched GW for granite info and found lots of advice that was absolutely priceless, including a great post by Stonegirl that should be bumped to the first page for eternity. Drawer/Cabinet pulls - I got these from Menards, a Midwestern home improvement chain similar to Home Depot but less expensive. Total cost for all of them was under $200. Faucet - got it on sale from a local plumbing supply company - $250 Lanterns above island - Overstock.com - These were only $166 a piece, and I think they also give the kitchen a more glamorous look! Construction work (replacing soffit lighting, taking out fluorescent light box, leveling out island to one level, labor on backsplash)- I hired 2 guys to do the work at $25/hour. I had seen their work before and they worked with the granite supplier/fabricator on many jobs so it was nice that they all had a good working relationship. I saved money by doing the cleanup every night so I didnt have to pay them to do it. They worked pretty fast and Im really happy with the work they did. I would definitely hire them again. I think total labor cost was $1500. Backsplash - Daltile Rittenhouse Square subway tile in arctic white semi gloss. I looked up many threads on GW for backsplashes and settled on this because of the classic look and cost! $250 for materials, took the tile guy about 8 hours to do it. Adams Counterstools were from Target.com, not Pottery Barn. I liked the look in the PB catalog but found the lookalikes at Target. I have 2 little boys that are very rough on furniture so I didn't want to spend a lot. Plus, I was on a budget. I think they were $78 a piece. Kitchen table & chairs from Kmart. $229 for table and 4 chairs. Surprisingly, shockingly well-made. Kmart doesn't suck as much as I thought! Appliances- the range was kind of a splurge, it was about $2000. But I cook a lot and justified the expense. Fridge was on sale. Dishwasher on sale as well, it's okay, if I had to do it over again I maybe would have forked over a little more money for a better dishwasher. Apparently Maytag and I have different definitions of the word "quiet". Window Treatment - I think that roman shade from Smith + Noble was about $200. Oh, how I wish I could sew better... Thanks again! This forum is AWESOME!!!...See Morehelp! small budget for small kitchen remodel! pics
Comments (4)First you need to determine if it's a bearing wall. Either way, cost will be a factor. If not load bearing, you'd be looking at new cabinets, countertops, and perhaps matching the flooring some. You could make it a half wall adding some storage along there; but I see you have a heat thing (sorry... Floridan here so not sure what you call it) coming out of the floor along that wall. That may need to be revented then. BUt if you could, with storage along that wall you can do an over-hang to give it a more open look....See MoreHelp!! Kitchen(Cave) Remodel/Update on a BUDGET
Comments (16)I think the light fixture's yellow glass shade is probably contributing to the problem, so I would take it off and get a better read on the cabinets and countertops. The next thing I would do is remove the wall paper. Where the wallpaper is in front of the window to the left of the sink, what is that, some kind of valance? Can it be removed, it is blocking sunlight. Then remove the cabinet handles and give them a good cleaning with a degreasing product. In our last house they cleaned up and got about three shades lighter. You will need to thoroughly clean before painting anyway so this will not be wasted work. I have even had to scrap layers of built up grease off with a razor blade- ick. I kind of like the green color of the Iaminate. The full splash makes it a bit intense but it is probably just a thin sheet of the laminate glued to the wall and may come down very easily. It could also be covered it like nosoccermom suggested. Two full height stainless backsplash panels can be gotten pretty cheap at HD or Lowes. I don't know your storage needs, but you could remove all the uppers on the sink wall and the backsplash, You could do a small splash behind the sink to protect from water, it could be stainless, or tile, and then do open shelves on that wall. If you do decide to paint the cabinets, think a soft grey-green would look nice. If you can remove the backsplash, I think I might go with a chocolate brown on the lowers and a light off white on the top....See MoreBudgeting a small kitchen remodeling - help needed
Comments (9)Have you been over to the kitchens forum? I'd recommend spending a couple of weeks reading over there and just absorbing. Sure, there are a lot of drop-dead $100k kight-end kitchens, but there are also some 10k DIY ones... and lots in between. I think you can do this and get the kitchen you want without hiring it ALL out to a GC. Sort of your option B. The first thing you need to do is come up with the layout. That's where the kitchen forum can really help. If your current layout is great, that's one huge hurdle overcome. REmember that changing plumbing will add a lot to the cost. Second, get some cabinet quotes so you can see what you're working with, budget-wise. I'm currently helping a friend with a budget, semi-DIY kitchen remodel. She really wants Carrara marble counters like mine, but may need to trim her budget elsewhere to afford them. WE're looking at Ikea cabinets (some googling will show you some gorgeous otherwise high-end kitchens with Vikings and Liebers and marble that used Ikea cabinets, so don't discount them out-of-hand.) as well as mid-priced semi-custom ones. Her strategy is to do the design and sourcing herself, but hire out the electrical (maybe), cabinet installation (unless Ikea), and countertop fabrication/installation. If there was any plumbing involved, she'd probably hire that out too. She'll remove the old cabinetry, install the faucet, tile the backsplash, paint, do minor electrical, patch drywall. In this way she does not need to hire anyone terribly skilled = expensive. Countertops are what they are, cabinet install is usually done by some subs the cabinet-seller recommends, etc. If you are a good planner, organizer, and scheduler, this might work for you....See MoreS Wil
