Rose cuttings check up

So last Fall I stuck a bunch of cuttings in dirt because since I'm turning a large front yard into a rose and flower garden and need to save money wherever I can in order to fill it with flowers. I had some great cuttings from a generous group member here, and others from random local people who let me have some and a couple were just tiny twigs even. I dipped them in rooting hormone and just stuck them in dirt. I hoped at least a few would survive. Well we had a thaw and I went to look at them since they are finally not under snow and they look great...some even look perfect. Some look green and fresh still bottom to top, and some look dry on top but still fresh and green towards the ground. So I'm wondering if this means I should be hopeful? If any were dead wouldn't they have turned bad looking at the ground level by now? I feel like I can start being hopeful now but I've never rooted rose cuttings before.
