Furniture Design Dilemma Home Decorating

Furniture for odd shaped room

I can’t figure out what furniture layout to use in this odd shaped room. I’m pretty much starting from scratch so willing to buy new pieces(except the sofa/love seat.) The small table to the left of the fireplace is housing all the tv/internet cables and cords. And please don’t lecture me about the oversized tv over the fireplace (marriage is all about compromise :)) Also note there are no overhead lights in this room (and I’m not a big fan of them anyway) so a design that incorporates lamps is a plus!

you have gorgeous furniture. I love neutrals. Can you move the rug over nearer towards the fireplace and bedroom door, or get a smaller rug. Having 1/2 of the rug near the entry walkway makes it off balance. The couch by the wall is off kilter from the rug too. I would pull the couch and loveseat closer together to create an L shape with a side table in the corner of the L. A round coffee table ottoman would work too.

I might push the loveseat that's perpendicular to the front door toward the fireplace by about a foot or so, then add a narrow console table behind it. The table will act somewhat like a room divider to separate the entry walkway space from the living area. I'd remove the current armchair (too big) and get a smaller one to put on the other side of the fireplace. Where the current armchair is, add a tall etagere for books or objects to add some visual interest. Get a couple of small cube ottomans to put under the console for additional seating when you need it. Add a small square coffee table in front of the loveseat. You need some color in this room. I'd opt for a different rug that maybe has some blue or sage green, then pick up those colors for throw pillows.

I think I would swap the smaller sofa and put it n the tv room and put the larger one centered, floating in front of the fireplace. I'm not usually a fan, but since your window is off center, I'd try putting the small sofa at and angle, right of the window and face it to a tv in the opposite corner. For the bay window in the formal space, I think it would be a great spot to put your barrel chairs with a 36" round table height side table. What a wonderful place to have morning coffee, read a magazine, play a game of chess, etc or even maybe do a small puzzle. Like this arrangement, but a small round, game size type table.

Contemporary--tilting toward traditional. All over color:BM revere pewter, all over trim and ceiling BM White Dove,fireplace accent wall BM Kendall charcoal, floor is medium wood (stain not final)This is inspiration room for my fireplace it will be painted (not wood) striated Naxos white marble. I love the furniture but not sure about all chairs and no couch being right across from dining room. Also,mezzanine over left side of room will have black metal railing similar to picture below.

If it was just my husband and I it would be fine the way it is. with children it’s a huge safety issue because if they stand on the couch they can go down the stairs. It’s driving me crazy to say the least. I feel others might look at the room differently than I would and would have a better idea

Buy 2 Side tables. A sofa table for behind the sofa (not sure where you have power to plug in light fixtures) you will need layered lighting as in table lamps and possibly a floor lamp.
What are your favourite colours? To add some interest get a colourful area rug, pillows and a nice throw.Plus art work!
I get it with the t.v men love to recline while watching t.v. Do you have room for 2 zero clearance reclining chairs?
To save your back, draw & cut out the couch/love seat, chairs and place on your drawing. Move around until you like what you see, then physical move.

Do I square up a rug to the corners of the room, or oriented with the fireplace wall? I started moving things around and got so frustrated that this is my current situation!

I would just move the rug so it isn't in the area where the door opens and get it as close to the fireplace as you can safely get it. Then arrange the furniture on it.
