Arranging furniture in an odd shape living room with fireplace

Hi

We recently moved to a typical San Francisco Victorian flat which has a living room with a fireplace and an opening to a dining room. We are not really using the fireplace and rather set the room for best TV viewing experience. The dining room is also not used for dining.
Since the fireplace is at the center of the room and the entrance is right across we are left with no walls for a tv. Seems like it's impossible to have a seating area and a center of a TV at the same time without hiding the fireplace with a sofa.
Diagonal wouldn't work as we have bay windows so it leaves a lot of dead space behind.
Any ideas guys?

I meant not to put on a wall but to float a sofa facing the fireplace. Then, two chairs and an accent table in the bay.

In your case, I think I 'd mount the tv above the FP and tip it forward a bit. I think it almost always looks best to have the living and dining room used for it's intended purposes.

Thanks! That's actually not possible there is not enough wall across the fireplace to put a sofa. We don't have a need for a dining place and rather not purchase a dining set just for staging purposes...

I think these are my favorite! i never would have pushed the furniture over that far towards the stairs. But I like it. what would you put in the back "nook" and then now at the bottom right of the layout (which leads into the dining room)? anything? Kids toy organization will go somewhere for the next few years :)

If it was just my husband and I it would be fine the way it is. with children it’s a huge safety issue because if they stand on the couch they can go down the stairs. It’s driving me crazy to say the least. I feel others might look at the room differently than I would and would have a better idea

A difficult space to work with because it has several traffic paths to contend with. I would try a round entry table with stools under it to pull out to get cozy with fireplace. Not sure of size without detailed measurements. I would do a pretty wood and printed stools for a welcoming effect. Something like this.

Oh I see, interesting! And you think it will work that the sofa will be with the back to the entrance door (entrance to the house from small corridor)?

If the room is wide enough, that will work. However, I would not put the TV there because of your beautiful and probably original fireplace woodwork.

The rooms look beautiful. Can you plan to use the dining room for viewing tv and keep the front room for conversation?

It would be fine to use the dining space as your tv room. Notice in my above sample photo, there is another "sitting" room next the formal space. Just be sure to get a narrow coffee table to give you enough thoroughfare.

I think I would swap the smaller sofa and put it n the tv room and put the larger one centered, floating in front of the fireplace. I'm not usually a fan, but since your window is off center, I'd try putting the small sofa at and angle, right of the window and face it to a tv in the opposite corner. For the bay window in the formal space, I think it would be a great spot to put your barrel chairs with a 36" round table height side table. What a wonderful place to have morning coffee, read a magazine, play a game of chess, etc or even maybe do a small puzzle. Like this arrangement, but a small round, game size type table.

Thanks Guys those are all great comments! Unfortunately we have to use the fireplace room as TV room since the dining room is smaller and shares a wall with our nursery (trying to avoid noise). The space between the fireplace and entrance is 9.5 feet. Darzy do you think that's enough for sofa, coffee table and room behind the sofa for passage? A narrow sofa is a good idea but still its about 4 feet...
