Tomatoes in Oklahoma: Part I, Varieties/Types
Comments (12)You're welcome, Sammy. I haven't even reviewed the list myself, and it is an old list. I suspect I still grow some of the plants on the list now, but I also know that I have found even more that produce great here since 2008. With thousands of varieties to choose from, we have many options, and most of them will perform here in a typical year. It can be harder to get great production in an extremely dry year or an extremely hot year, especially if the heat arrives early. One factor that seems to matter more than the variety selection is simply getting them planted early enough that they have plenty of time to set fruit before the heat arrives. Brandywine Sudduth's is still my own personal favorite, but it produces erratically---great in cooler, rainier years and not very well at all in hot, dry ones. I tend to grow it anyway most years on the chance that maybe this year will be the year a cool, rainy spring helps it be very productive. Although it wasn't on my Grow List for this year, I saw them in a store yesterday and promptly bought two. I probably jinxed myself by buying them and we'll probably have an insanely hot spring, but I hope that doesn't happen....See MoreTomato varieties and their uses(Canning, slicing, etc)
Comments (11)A couple of other tips you could pass on to those new to canning or those not current with the guidelines may find helpful: 1 - by far the most popular method of canning tomatoes is called Crushed Tomatoes with no added liquid for the best over-all quality and unlimited utility. The instructions are also in all the Ball Canning books. 2 - rather than using the old "dip in boiling water to peel" method many have shifted to the recommended "freeze whole for min. of 48 hours" method. Just fill a big bag with whole tomatoes and set it in the freezer. When thawed the skins sip right off easily. Some core the fruit first, some don't. Much less time consuming, easier peeling, and less heat in the kitchen. I would disagree with euarto that big beefsteaks are mostly juice but I suppose that would depend on how one raised them. And of course if you just drain any tomatoes before jarring you eliminate most of the juice and cut any cooking time by half. Again you'll find much more about all this over on Harvest if interested. Heirlooms: (#1)Cherokee Purple, (#2)Brandywine, Mr Stripey (blah), Yellow Pear, (yucko) (#3)Hillbilly Hybrids: (2) Big Boy, (1)Better Boy, Celebrity, Patio(cherry types), Grape, (6)Husky Cherry Red, (4)Early Girl, (5)Sweet Million and (3)Lemon Boy. I'd skip the rest. Dave...See MoreMother Earth News Top Tomato Varieties Survey
Comments (4)I'm not a subscriber but also receieved it b'c I'm on some list somewhere b'c a few years ago I was asked to work with one of their writers on an article about tomatoes. There were several contributors from different parts of the country and it looks like a repeat of that again. I also know Cheryl Long, the Editor, from her long tenure at Organic Gardening when Mike McGrath was there and when I participated in many articles about tomatoes and peppers. But the OG of today is not the OG of old. And I'm not sure what I can contribute to this survey when I've already participated in a similar article. Sure, there are some fave new tomato varieties I have since that article ran, but I think it's best they choose all new contributors. Carolyn...See MoreCan Anyone Identify this Tomato variety?
Comments (4)I really wish it was possible to do - ID a tomato from a picture - because we get so many requests to do it. Unfortunately it isn't. There are simply too many possibilities. Many folks just don't realize the number of tomato varieties there are out there. Best guess is that it was a stray seed. Or that is a KBX2, a KBX that was crossed since it doesn't appear to be pure potato-leaf and has green shoulders. But KBX was a throwback anyway so throwbacks of it are likely. Otherwise there are lots of red/orange with green shoulder varieties. Save seeds if you wish and see what happens next year with those seeds. If it remains stable then you can name it whatever you wish. :) Dave...See Moreedweather USDA 9a, HZ 9, Sunset 28
