Growing Tomatoes

Can Anyone Identify this Tomato variety?

Hi, This tomato was in a pack of KBX seeds I bought through a reputable vendor. I know I didn't make a mistake with mixing up seeds because I didn't start any red varieties. This plant was one of the first to germinate, it took off like crazy right from the start and was the first plant out of 35 to produce fruit. Right now on the plant there are quite a few tomatoes and it's still putting out flowers like crazy. I would like to save seed of it but my concern is if it's a hybrid. Any help or thoughts from anyone who may have a better idea of what variety this could be would be much appreciated. I didn't go into flavor because everyones has their own opinion on such things but I do like it.

I really wish it was possible to do - ID a tomato from a picture - because we get so many requests to do it. Unfortunately it isn't. There are simply too many possibilities. Many folks just don't realize the number of tomato varieties there are out there.

Best guess is that it was a stray seed. Or that is a KBX2, a KBX that was crossed since it doesn't appear to be pure potato-leaf and has green shoulders. But KBX was a throwback anyway so throwbacks of it are likely. Otherwise there are lots of red/orange with green shoulder varieties.

Save seeds if you wish and see what happens next year with those seeds. If it remains stable then you can name it whatever you wish. :)

Probably it is not a red variety ( judging from the lower ripe tomato) .

It also looks like some kind of bi-color. or even a brown/purple.

Stray and crossed seeds are other possibilities.

It is possible to narrow it down when you have a few fully ripe ones.

Take comfort from the fact that you aren't the only one to commit this bungle ;) as several other previous posts here will attest to. It happens and we learn from it. Unfortunately, the answer is usually the same - no way to tell with any degree of accuracy. They are all regular leaf but once the first fruits develop you'll be able to tell as the Beefsteaks will be larger than the Rutgers and the grapes will be in clusters and substantially small. You can then go back and do some pruning on the suckers below if you wish. Hope this helps. Dave

I think if you're pruning to one stem, you probably don't need to do much additional pruning. Maintaining some leaf cover and foliage for photosynthesis is important. Epinasty is sometimes not accompanied by any other detrimental symptoms. Some varieties seem prone to it--I notice a lot of people asking about epinasty in Early Girl tomatoes, for example. I would just make sure you're not overwatering and that you're not fertilizing with too much nitrogen. Especially after a tomato plant starts flowering and fruiting, excessive nitrogen can inhibit fruit production. It can also make plants much more attractive to pests and more susceptible to foliar disease. Most tomato-specific fertilizers have lower levels of N and higher levels of P and K. Most general plant fertilizers will have more N or equal levels of N, P and K.

I'd suspect it is one of the dozens of "blue" azalea cultivars popular in this area. None are really "blue" flowered but have flowers in various shades of lilac/violet to purple - 'Purple Gem', 'Blue Moon', Blue Tit', 'Blue Diamond', 'Blue Danube', etc. My first choice would be 'Purple Gem' - it looks most like the photo. A visit to any local nursery that offers a good selection of rhodies and azaleas should provide you with some flowering examples to compare. Check out Swanson's or Wells Medina in Bellevue.

I take it that the seeds are large, and the flowers fragrant? Looks like a member of the genus Canavalia. Probably Canavalia ensiformis, Jack Bean, a semi-tropical member of the bean family.

Hey Seyson.

I've had and eaten many ripe ones already it has green shoulders but the tomatoes turn totally red when ripe. I was just taking a shot in the dark to see if anyone had any idea if it looked like something they may have grown or were familiar with. I realize there are many tomato varieties this could be.... I'll post a Photo of one totally ripe which I should have done in the first place...... I'll just save the seed anyway and go from there and see if it grows the same again.

Alright , Dave. You are absolutely right ; It is a RED tomato, no doubts.

But it is so typical in color and shape like so many beefsteaks.

It resembles BEEF.MASTER Google search images and see how it compares.
