Replacing Original Subway Tile in 1930's Bathroom
Comments (4)Hello Chipster, It sounds like your tile was mounted directly to the lath-and-plaster wall and that the tiles pulled away the layer of paint when they detached. These tiles would have absolutely had some type of adhesive bonding them to the wall, whether it was a bed of pure Portland cement or some other organic-based glue. As long as the substrate is solid, you can reattach your new tile using a powdered thinset mortar mixed with water. Your grout is going to be simple Portland cement combined with locally available washed and gauged sand. It's highly unlikely that you'll be able to replicate this exact mix so you'll have to use a manufactured grout instead. Every grout manufacturer offers a "Natural Gray" color but each manufacturer's gray is different. I suggest that you find out which grouts manufacturers are locally available to you and get samples of each gray for comparison. Best of luck, Shaughnn...See MoreTEC Power Grout? Comments (6)Guest bathroom shower surround, glossy white tiles, "regular" TEC grout, 2008 I think. MB and hall bathroom tub surrounds, glossy white tiles, TEC XT grout, 2011. No issues. The XT grout doesn't require sealing, but can be, using a solvent based sealer. We have moderately hard water. We wipe down the tub surrounds with a microfiber cloth after showering (to prevent water spots on the glossy tile). I clean the bathrooms pretty much weekly. I spray the tub surrounds with 7th Generation disinfecting bathroom cleaner spray. Let sit a few minutes, and wipe dry with a microfiber cloth. Tile and grout look as they did when first installed....See MoreWould white hex tiles/grey grout be too busy for large bathroom?
Comments (21)Thanks oaktown! Those are great pics. I very much appreciate your thoughts! I am reconsidering keeping the concrete floor. But I am worried that the concrete will stain with constant water exposure. Also, if there ever is a water main leak, it might be easier to hide any sawcut marks by replacing tile. The other reason I was thinking of tile, is I want to do the whole house in the new concrete flooring. This will be very expensive and may have to wait for a year. It might put off finishing the bathroom until then, unless I do tile....See MoreWhite paint color to pair w/ white subway tile in bathroom?
Comments (8)If trim in MBr doesn't work, try White Dove. Without seeing the tile in person I can't advise as to whether it will work. I like to prime and paint a piece of trim (about 12" or so) so I can get a good idea of the color and carry it around with me. White Dove is a no, go with a white that doesn't have obvious tones jumping out at you (yellow, pink) when you compare the tile and paint side by side. Again, working up a trim sample is always better than choosing off the paint chip. Try Cotton Balls (OC 122), Cloud White (OC-130), or Decorators White...See MoreRelated Professionals
