A bad food thread
Comments (21)Oh I got a rise from you folks. Wonderful! I have no idea how much of this is true or not. Just passing time I guess. Here's something from Google Answers: The Somatic Cell Count and Milk Quality "The somatic cell count (SCC) is commonly used as a measure of milk quality. Somatic cells are simply animal body cells present at low levels in normal milk. High levels of these cells in milk indicate abnormal, reduced-quality milk that is caused by an intramammary bacterial infection (mastitis). The majority of the cells in a somatic cell count are leukocytes (white blood cells), and some are cells from the udder secretory tissue (epithelial cells). The epithelial cells are part of the normal body function and are shed and renewed in normal body processes. The white blood cells serve as a defense mechanism to fight disease (infection), and assist in repairing damaged tissue. Milk markets routinely rely on somatic cell counts to help ensure a quality product. SCC levels are monitored to assure compliance with state and federal milk quality standards. Today, most markets pay a premium for low SCC, good-quality milk." http://ianrpubs.unl.edu/dairy/g1151.htm As far as trusting the FDA to monitor what is safe or not, I canÂt say I entirely do trust them. After all they are a Washington bureaucracy. Don't you think there just might be a bit of influence going on there? I've also never trusted the guidelines they set for various preservatives, additives and whatnot. Have they ever figured out the cumulative affect of eating that crap over a lifetime or do take into account that a significant portion of the population only consumes processed foods loaded with that stuff? I don't know. I once worked with a woman who was a total germaphobic. She washed her hands constantly. As I remember they were always red and swollen. People in that office often brought in goodies from home to eat. She wouldn't touch them unless they came from a grocery store or restaurant and she was the first one to open the box or pkg. If someone else beat her to it, she wouldn't touch the food. Oh yes, she ate every single meal in a restaurant. She was also sick a lot. I guess I've never had a thing for germs or critters in food as long as I wasn't aware of them. I just doesn't bother me that much. With that said, until last year I could not eat watermelon. Whenever I looked at those seeds I thought of woodticks. I hate woodticks; especially the big bloated ones. As a kid, I picked enough of them off myself. Then I discovered seedless watermelon. Love it....See MoreFood tastes bad
Comments (6)Yep. A lot of flavor is experienced in the nasal passages. If yours are congested, inflamed, or stuffed up, it can really change the perception of flavor. If it's not draining it can also harbor bacteria which can smell/taste bad. And if the Sudafed is helping it drain, that can make it all taste worse. A metallic taste can be a sign of infection. Drinking lots of fluids, especailly hot drinks/soups with lots of steam to inhale, steamy hot showers, and even hot compresses on your chest and face can help. If it's not all better 10-14 days after the symptoms, do see a doctor. Feel better!...See More12/27/15: Bad food combo that make you sick, food & medicine reaction

Comments (15)Pretty basic stuff but I've done extensive study since the melamine scandal in 2007. I get the FDA recalls via e-mail. Have learned so much from that steady list. Could have gone another hour or two rather than the elementary but that is common I suppose in snippet pod-casts. I'll welcome any information that gets people thinking. Shocking sometimes how clueless the basics are for some. Like a poster here a couple years ago that thought a FoodSaver system would preserve food for shelf-life. Seal the food like raw chicken and it would be pantry shelf stable, room temp, like canning. It did not go into depth as it should have. When I bring up steak or a fish fillet from the freezer, they go in the sink while I think about prep. 10-15 minutes. Fish goes into a pyrex bowl of cold tap water. (in the freezer wrapper/food saver bag) Like any 'ice cube' it cools the water quickly. Before 20 minutes or so it goes into the fridge in the water bath as is. Steaks come out of the FoodSaver package and thaw in the fridge open on a plate to thaw 'air dry' to remove any surface moisture. Sears better in a cast iron dry. The worst offenders in the kitchen/home is standing water at room temp. Electric drip coffee makers, fridge ice makers, steam ovens, travel water bottles...standing water as in flooding basements, storm tragedy, ...we all know that drying out immediately is key to prevent mold. Why no one thinks about standing water in appliances. 25 years ago our old white Braun elec drip coffee maker seemed fine and I did the vinegar cleanse every month. I stopped drinking coffee for a year or so thinking it was irritable to my system. Further inspection it was pink inside...pink mold is not good. Electric drips are now mostly black now. Manufacturers do not give a hoot about health. Good healthy gut can handle all minor bacteria. But why stress even a healthy system. Two very healthy co-workers with young children use daily water bottles but never clean them. Our own spittle is a breeding ground for bacteria out of our own mouth. Shocking they are so oblivious to 'microbial soup' that multiplies at room temp. Some people feel ill daily for years not knowing the basic culprit. Even if just a bit uncomfortable thinking it is ok normal. Rack their brains looking for dietary solutions for gut health. Love coffee now using our own roasted beans and a pour over Chemex....See Moresushipup1
