The deer ate my PEONIES!
Comments (9)Sometimes young deer are not certain what is safe to eat and what isn't, and deer are looking around for winter browse this time of year. Also, when deer have the run of a property (that is, if real efforts are not being made to discourage them from being in the area), they will eventually try every plant around and may develop tastes for plants that normally they would have no interest in. As a garden consultant with a specialty in gardening in deer country, I have seen this again and again. Deer are creatures of habit. The trick is to make sure their habitual paths do not include your yard....See MoreNone of the peony roots from Lowes and Home Depot grow
Comments (15)I have a couple of peonies under massive pines, they get mostly afternoon sun and do okay, better than hostas under pines!! Peonies don't need or want too damp of a spot so the drier part shade works much better than wet part shade. Your plants probably will be a bit taller and not as full, though. I'm not sure about hydrangeas in that spot, mine require a lot more water than I can get consistently under pines. The only things that seem to not care at all is daylilies! MB does stand behind their plants, if yours don't come back in the spring call them--they'll certainly replace them. Same with Springhill, they're having a sale on Kirinmaru peony right now, with keycode 0442569 they're $19.95 each. I'm tempted but have ordered far too many already! It sure is pretty, though! Comments (13)I hesitated before putting out the Singing in the Rain name just because mine is more of an orangey pink (from what I remember, didn't even get to see it last year!) than that. The difference could easily be the soil and environmental, though. Here's a couple of pics of mine from several years ago. The first shows several blooms and the fade to yellow, see how orangey the more pink ones are? Ignore the very bottom left flower, that's a droopy flower next to it! And PLEASE ignore the foliage! That was a heavy hail storm year, seems we've had far too many of those lately... The second picture was taken in full sun so is probably a bit washed out but otherwise shows the color tone of a newly opened flower in my garden....See MoreGiving Up; Or, I Hate Home Depot México
Comments (8)Thank you. I know it seems melodramatic but I was just heartsick last night. As it turns out, all is, perhaps, not lost. I only attacked things on the roof, so everything inside, on the balcony, or on the terrace is fine. The mangos were utterly unbothered. Even one of the lemons doesn’t seem too upset. I’m happy to see that Billy No Mates, although (hopefully only temporarily) scarred, looks like he’ll survive. I’ve no clue what’s going to happen with the passion fruit. Most of the adenium seedlings, while a bit battered, may make it. A few are largely unscathed. As a bonus, I noticed a helper hanging close by, keeping many eyes on things....See More- 5 years ago
