Got 3 Itoh Peonies at Home Depot today! Pics & Questions
Hi folks! I bought 3 Itoh peonies at Home Depot and I have a few questions. First of all, I really know nothing much about Peony varieties (Itoh or otherwise) and I was hoping someone could help. Does anyone think that the last two pictures of flowers belong to the same plant? I have no idea. Or they are two roots planted in the same pot? Do you believe the picture of the bud is going to be a white peony with a purplish center (the same as the pic before it)? Does anyone have an idea of the name of any of these? Home Depot doesn't tell you much (I think because their prices are fairly low, as these Itoh's were $59.95 each). These are in 3 gallon pots and are the same price as the one I purchased last year. BTW, the one I purchased last year is doing very well. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Genie

Comments (7)east central alabama, my readings in western lee county were just slightly warmer than auburn and came in at 10 degrees low and upper 20's high. i have a camellia in a large container that i have yet to plant and it seems to be undamaged, although i did move it to the carport the night before but i am not sure how much protection it got from wind since it is open on 3 sides. the soil was also completely frozen in that pot. i also purchased a callistemon (probably rigidus, maybe citrinus) this fall and it is also still in the container. it was actually flowering when the vortex hit! on the carport, it seems to be o.k., too. a new shrub for me and i don't know much about them but articles tels me they can't handle temps like we had. as expected, my sago's fronds (planted in the ground) are toast. it was about 4' in dia and i hope it will return this spring....See MoreJungle Jack's Plumerias at Home Depot & Lowes 2015
Comments (158)Congrats on the seed pod! I would go nuts if I saw a seed pod in the store! I went to Home Depot yesterday and used the last of my gift card balance on a 2 gallon Mandalay. I couldn't find any information about this one except on JJ's own website. I decided to take a chance on it because the description states very strong sweet scent. I'm realizing that I prefer plumerias with scent versus pretty flowers without scent. This flower is suppose to be pretty too. The tag photo of Mandalay kind of reminds me of a darker version of Desert Sunrise but with less veining. I also saw a Thai Splash but I had to limit myself to 1 plant. I walked around the store and saw there was another display table with various tropical plants and I saw some plumerias on it. These were 1 gallon size and $15.98 but they were not Jungle Jacks. There were pictures of various flowers on the tag and most of them had a white flower circled. They were infested with spider mites. :( It reminds me of when I went to the Lowes in Vista. They had a great selection of JJs not often available but they were infested with thrips. Comments (66)The Halo blooms I saw at the APS convention were the size of half of a volleyball and absolutely perfectly formed. I'm not unhappy with the size of the bloom for a first year plant and I'm certainly happy it survived the winter but am looking forward to bigger and better next spring. I actually think I liked all of the ones I got from Select Plus as much if not better than the Halo bloom and all of those put together were less expensive! Comments (11)Some Itohs fade from opening to a different color before the petals fall, Singing in the Rain being a prime example. A mature plant can have blooms ranging from orangy pink to yellow at the same time. There have also been some pics of Itohs with "sports"--stems of what looks to be a different flower blooming on an established plant. I'm pretty sure some of those pics are here on this forum from either last year or the year before. Bartzella is the most common yellow Itoh that is sold in the big box stores, could be yours. I say common but it's still very much sought after so a good one to find. And if it was in the standard (I think around 3 gallon?) pot that was a good price. You can find some varieties bareroot now for a decent price but most of the Monrovia potted Itohs sell from around $79-99, depending on the area and variety....See More

7 years agoI hesitated before putting out the Singing in the Rain name just because mine is more of an orangey pink (from what I remember, didn't even get to see it last year!) than that. The difference could easily be the soil and environmental, though. Here's a couple of pics of mine from several years ago. The first shows several blooms and the fade to yellow, see how orangey the more pink ones are? Ignore the very bottom left flower, that's a droopy flower next to it! And PLEASE ignore the foliage! That was a heavy hail storm year, seems we've had far too many of those lately...
The second picture was taken in full sun so is probably a bit washed out but otherwise shows the color tone of a newly opened flower in my garden.
