Off topic: Thanksgiving cactus ready to bloom
Comments (5)I consider myself lucky since I live in So Cal. I have many temperature tolerant orchids as well as approximately 10 Christmas cactus. They are all setting bud and will bloom for Thanksgiving. I have always heard that the shortening of the day and cooler weather initiates bud set as with Phal's. I never touch them as far as repotting since I want them to grow into specimens as several of them are, Once in a while the cats will knock one over or it will get to heavy for the hanger and fall. Then a piece will break off so I can start a new plant. I also have an Easter cactus that reliably blooms around Easter time....See MoreXmas cactus is a Thanksgiving cactus! Blooms!
Comments (8)Thanks Maid :) I never slowed down on watering mine, and it didnt hurt it. Since I have gotten it I always water once a week. I also used MG right before it got buds and it didnt hurt it at all. I used the granulated that you put in water though. Since it didnt seem to have any neg effects the first time I just did it again yesterday. Another thing I did that I didnt know I wasnt supposed to, lol..was that I moved it around alot. Changed spots a few times, was turning it for equal light on all sides in front of the window. I didnt get any bud loss. The only prob I have had is that my cat keeps pulling off buds now as they form. Every day I see new buds, and the lil b****** pops em off. The ones he cant get to are still blooming nicely. He's even been tearing pieces of segments off..must not taste good cuz he just leaves them on the counter like the buds. So why in the world does he keep doing it? lol. dumb cat. It is very exciting isnt it? I think yoursd will be fine and bloom nicely. Waiting for those buds to get big enough and bloom was like torture for me, lol. Good luck, and post pix when it blooms!! Comments (6)Just the way the DNA is programmed. I can't remember if I've ever gotten double blooms with my Thanksgiving Cactus, I want to say once But I'm not certain (and if it happened it was not much farther apart than Thanksgiving and Christmas, not your Fall and Spring scenario)...See MoreInducing bloom in a Thanksgiving cactus?
Comments (7)popmama ..."So I just spin it around when I see the buds"... Did you ever loose any buds? I am asking since there are many 'rules' out there and I wonder which are really important. I move my TC often and never lost buds because of that (I am talking small buds - they supposedly drop if you move plant at that time). I keep mine in lots of sun while outdoors. When it is brought indoors, it gets whatever light is available. Buds form all around, regardless what side gets more light. Only thing I noticed is that blooms last longer if in good light but not extra strong - but I do not have space with strong winter light for it since it got bigger and doesn't fit under lights. Here are couple of shots of bigger plant; blooms last year (same as years before): Same plant, just buds so far - from few different angles (budding late this year): And small TC that I got as a rooted cutting in spring - it has been moved many times after brought indoors. It is on a shelve, not in a window, now - photos are 18 days apart:...See MoreUser
