Help! Color choice - New Orleans shotgun house
I’ve been trying to pick an exterior color for too long! I know I want white trim, and I want a bold, complimentary toned door (warm if the siding is cool, cool if the siding is warm) and an addiditon accent color for the mill work and a thin stripe around the windows, but I don’t know what all these colors should be! I live in New Orleans so bright colors are commoners even encouraged but I also want something I won’t get sick of. My current leanings for the primary color are Deep Sea Dive (SW), Newburg Green (BM), Moscow Midnight (SW), Bella Blue (BM), or something totally different like Old World (BM), Autumn Purple (BM), Persian Violet (BM) or Buttercup (BM). Lots of options! Any favorites or curve balls welcome. I have lovely stained glass that has purples greens and blues in it (more vibrant than the pictures express), as well as white crepe Myrtle trees in front of the house to lighten it up.

Comments (26)Amen to that, Carol! I have had to live off of the government for short times in my life, but I've paid for others to do so when I was working, so I don't feel like I'm so bad. I HAD a retirement account, but then the stock market crashed, and then I got injured and had cancer and couldn't work for two years, so there that went. I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but for people to feel superior because they have a 401(k) is just laughable. Look at all those people at Worldcom who thought they had it made. My sister worked for them. She is frugal to a fault, and she believed in them so much that she put most of her retirement savings into their stock. She lost it all, and it was a considerable amount. She's not stupid. She scrimped and saved for 30 years, and it was all gone, overnight. To give the impression that people who have savings accounts are somehow smarter than those who don't is snobbery, plain and simple. But that's o.k., because I truly believe that what you put out there comes back to you, and that if you have what the bible calls "ill gotten gains", which can just be money stashed away for your own benefit instead of giving to others who are in need, it will be taken away from you. You cannot hold on to ill gotten gains. Go read your Bible. My father once told me I would never have money, because I would give it all away. He was right. I'm sort of proud of that. Even in my current financial plight, I am thinking of going to help those who are worse off than I am, NOT about what the interest rate is on my IRA or 401(k). Comments (4)Sorry, I only have diverse beige and realist beige. This is what you should do. Hold the color chip up to the wall. Does it match? If it does then I think the emptiness of the room is clouding your perception. Especially with the white ceiling. I did the same thing on my front door. The paint was the exact color of the chip. Is it too late to pick another color for gray? It sounds like you want a color that is almost white. I know I have not been very helpful. Comments (59)Welcome to the forum. I've renovated in the Lower Garden District and our first home was behind Fat Harrys. Sadly, we've left NOLA. But, renovating there is an adventure. Don't forget that you will need to tip the inspector when he does you the courtesy of inspecting the installation of those new on-demand hot water heaters. $20.00 should do it. Number one priority is to take care of any water issues, roof, gutters, drains and foundations. Formosan's are the enemy. Second priority is the electrical. Everything else can wait unless someone is making their debut. Looks like that could be a while. In which case, you can just do a New Orleans paint job:) (You will never understand that unless you have lived in New Orleans.) Plenty of good spots for that Rex memorabilia, too. Can't wait to see what you do to the old girl. Just don't be in too big a hurry to get it all done for the Junior League Tour of Homes. They can wait. If you rush, you make mistakes. 5 years agoI like the current green color so maybe just look for a different color for the doors.
Use the visualizer on paint sites to try out colors. I could not resist trying to reproduce the colors of this flower. Maybe I should have left the trim white and just done the doors in purple.

5 years agoOh I love your house! As a historic home nut, New Orleans is such a fantastic city. I would pull the colors from your stained glass (swoon). It looks like you have primarily blues, purples, grey, and maybe a sliver of light green. I think your current leanings are right on. Really moody colors would be beautiful. If it were my home I'd paint the body in one of the deep blues or greys and use the Autumn Purple on the doors. I'd also consider using the door color on windows. Body of the house one color, white for the trim (you mentioned wanting white) and 3rd color for the doors AND windows. Being in New Orleans, the three colors really works. I'd also pleeeaase put the three missing columns back on the house and paint them white. :) It'll make a considerable difference.
emmarene9 mentioned keeping the grey, and grey would be really nice but maybe a deeper tone. This house has two shades of grey (I like the darker) with the autumn purple door:

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoOk well I tried out a slightly more grey/muted version of basically the same color, and now I can’t decide again!!!! The new vision is something like the first photo attached. The second photo is all brighter paint, the third has the sample in it, and the 4th and 5th are where you can really see the differences... ideas?!

5 years agoI am digging the brighter color! I think it looks great with the white trim and has just enough punch of color, especially for your location. I would bring it together with a salmon color door!
