Our schools do not allow the kids to make valentine boxes. They are each given a white paper bag with a heart sticker at school.

I remember how much fun it was when I was young to decorate a valentine box.

Sounds to me like this is a Parent's School Project - cute idea or not.

Social media to the rescue? It appears to be more of a challenge for the parents.

I think it means they're hoping that between all classmates there will be a valentine from every state.

Of course parents have to help by contacting friends, family. Certainly not a parents' project though. I hope they get one from every state. I can understand the kids would be excited about this.

Please do not criticize this school project. I am a retired teacher, but still very involved with the school system. This is my two cents.

This is not a project for the parents. This is a situation for parents to support learning. The students in this class have a hands on geography and social studies lesson. It does not sound like a competition. Bravo to the teacher for planning a motivating authentic lesson. Kendal's interest is captured already. These kinds of projects are the spice of school. The lucky students in this class will learn and remember their experience their entire lives. Bravo to the parents and grandparents for their support.

Thank you, thank you, thank you happ2b. Kendall has put a lot of her time into talking to people. It has been a valuable lesson for her. I heard her telling her cousins her age all about it.. they said they wished their teachers would do this, too. Kendall even made a list of people and showed her mom who she would like to call. Anyone can go buy a valentine for a dollar. I bought 10 yesterday ready to mail to the school. It’s all about the kids!!

Asking a question is not criticizing, at least, I did not intend it to be. I do not know how children age 7 - 8 would contact people from all over the states, particularly, if there is no family or friends spread out. I think many parents will reach out via social media, similar to what you have done here. And yes, I will mail a card.

I know I'm relatively new hear, but I lurked a long long time before I joined. I am sad somebody posted their grandkids' name and school name. This isn't a private webpage and anybody can read it. It really scares me to see this much information.

I'd be happy to (and will) send a card to help with the project, but I do agree with Hot Rod about putting the child's name, school and address on the internet for anyone to see. Is there another way it could be done? Perhaps have the cards sent to you and KT members could PM you for your address? Or, set up a mailbox at the post office or one of those UPS places for cards to be mailed there? I'm sure there are ways to do this without identifying your granddaughter and her school.

I didn't look really hard, but don't see any address or school name on my phone. I see Kendall's name a couple of/few places.

Sometimes I think that we work ourselves up into too much of a sweat over this, for when we consider that of the millions of kids and millions of schools that are operational, the number of times that bad issues develop are so few as to be almost infinitessimal.

Teach our kids to be careful, yes, but let's not convince ourselves that there may be a scoundrel lurking behind every fourteenth/fifty-first(?) bush!

Along the line that many fear to fly but not to ride in a car, but it's far riskier to climb into a car for the ride to the airport than to walk into the door of the airplane: routine as contrasted to unusual experience.

Joyful, it’s been removed now but there was a full name and school address on a post. It would be nice if it was safe to leave it, but sadly there are too many bad people out there who use information like this to convince children to go with them for bad reasons.

And, why take the chance of something bad happening no matter how infinitesimal it may be?

The info that was up gave the child's full name, grade level which also gives readers her age, teacher's name, school name and the address of the school. With that a stranger could easily gain the child's trust. Odds are nothing would happen, but I always feel better to err on the side of caution especially when young children are involved.

Edit to add that I think this is a great project for the kids to do. It'll teach them about geography among other things in a fun and engaging way that book learning just doesn't offer. It's just the address being public that was the issue in my mind.

I'm thinking of including some photos of wildlife I've taken around my property and some photos of the area where I live so that the kids can get an idea of what N. California looks like. I think I might just be more excited than the kids - brings me back to the days when I worked at a local elementary school before retiring!
