Comments (9)Yes, Copperopolis is the name of a town in CA founded in 1860, near a newly discovered copper mining site. It was named because of the copper, and then the Greek word for City. It was a boom mining town during the Civil War. It is still there (pop ~ 3,000), now functioning as a tourist town in the old gold mining area of Northern CA, East of Stockton. There is a famous bar still there which was founded in 1862 - this rose was found near the bar. Many many old mystery roses have been found in the old gold rush area of California - the ones which have survived over 150 years with little or no care make great garden roses in similar climates. "Copperopolis Bar" is a mystery rose (might be a hybrid perpetual) which is not in commerce. However, it is at the Sacramento Cemetery Historic Rose Garden, and has been available for purchase at the once a year rose sale. It is a dark pink, with zillions of petals - gorgeous. Unfortunately, I could not find any info on the size of the bush (it is not even listed on HMF), but many HPs do not get very large, and the growth habit of the ones I have seen is fairly upright. So, garden-nut, you can tell US how big it gets! I would not worry about it still being very small just since last Spring - it is still a tiny baby. During our incredibly rainy winter this year, if it has good drainage it will just be growing roots - not top growth. That will come next Spring and Summer when we dry out and it gets warm and sunny. It might take 2-3 years for your rose to attain its mature size. So, please post pics of it and let us know what it does! Jackie...See MoreCopperopolis bar

Comments (2)Lisa -- It's a REALLY new "find." But I'll mention to the Cemetery folks that it should be added. I'm VERY impressed! This is what I know of it: “Copperopolis Bar” (Found, Bev Vierra. Prob. Hybrid Perpetual. Not in commerce.) This many-petalled deep pink rose has excited everyone who has seen it. Packed with petals, and VERY fragrant, it is almost never out of bloom. Vigorous as all get-out, it survived years of neglect near an old saloon. Blooms of robust presence are somewhat similar to those of another Found Rose: “Tylor Carrl,” but this one blooms in a very different deep pink color....See MoreAt What Stage Is Your Garden?
Comments (34)I can't remember not gardening, but have been gardening here for 20 years, however, the garden is new. For the first 17 yrs. or so, we had deer, and my roses never got more than a foot tall. I planted small ones, large ones, and climbers all close together because I knew none would ever get very large. Sometimes, they were only a few inches tall. I was crazy to keep buying roses, but I had succumbed to whatever it is that keeps us all doing this. I saw very few buds and almost never a bloom. I used every deer deterrent, commercial and homemade, known to man. Those first roses go back 20 years. Three years ago, I got wise and installed deer fencing - the only deterrent that works here. Those old roses absolutely burst with new growth and everything was too close together and climbers had nowhere to climb. We've expanded the garden a lot since then, and the second half of my roses are all new, 3 year olds or newer. I had always wanted enough roses to cut for the vase and to give big, luscious bouquets to friends, and now I can do that, but it's still hard for me to cut them. I think they look best on the bush. And, as others have said, thank goodness for these forums. There is always something new to learn....See Moregarden nut z9b
