Repairing Carpet on stairs
Comments (12)we call those california style. some retailers call them upholstered i think to make them sound better for the sales floor. True upholstered stairs we always considered sewn boots encasing the entire stair and side of the stair, and is rarely done anymore except by some very experienced craftsmen and on some wovens that require sewing. We had a sub a while back that would never waterfall and always did those turned nosing installs he called california even when we specifically state waterfalls. We had to let him go becasue he wouldnt waterfall when we told him to and always made excuses for it that made no sense. After we let him go, we found out he couldnt waterfall properly to get the right stretch. The problem we have run into with the pictured california style is that since stairs are a high traffic area they can never be tightened up over time if they develop looseness over the years, since they are secured at both places where the riser and the tread meet, which is the main reason i never recommend having them done with good quality carpet. If a lower quality carpet then I guess it really doesnt matter because it will be getting replaced in a few years anyway. At least thats my experience with them and trying to repair them for custoemrs....See MoreCat scratching carpeted stairs - alternative to foil?
Comments (11)When my cats are kittens I use a water bottle to catch them in the act of badness. It usually only takes a couple times then they would get the idea not to do certain things. But I had an older rescue that scratched stuff a lot and since she was recovering I didn't have the heart to spray and scare her so I would just remove her from scratching. One day we brought some firewood in for a fire, logs with bark on, and she was like a moth to a flame! After that I kept a clean log on the hearth laying down and that was her spot. Later I bought an old wooden crate for newspapers and she claimed that too. But that was it -no more furniture, rugs, nothing. And she had been pretty bad with the scratching. My new cats, one year old boy kittens, have now found the crate and that it their preferred 'post' too. The crate has rough wood on it not smooth and finished....See Morehow do people live with beige carpet and general carpet advice
Comments (46)Eleven years ago I replaced the cheap beige carpet in our house with beautiful Karastan wall-to-wall beige carpet. We have a lot of kids and back in 2004 we still had toddlers. I don't regret the carpets, at that point it was hard to know what type of hardwood to put down on a concrete slab, it seems that engineered hardwoods were an emerging product and solid hardwood planks were not recommended for slab foundations. There were moisture transfer issues that seemed to make hardwood floors a risky proposition back then. Our carpet looks exactly like the close-up sample that AuntJen posted. It looked to me like beautiful sand, the quality is excellent. We paid a fair sum of money for it in part because it did not off-gas, and we installed rubber padding (instead of the compressed foam) which helped prevent goat trails. Now we have a dog who occassionally barfs. So our carpet is stained. And worn out. Having a Dyson vacuum had made all the difference in keeping it looking good when we vacuumed daily, our carpet looked fabulous. Wish we had a Roomba. It's a frieze and I love it. I'd love hardwood floor more, but do not regret the carpeting. My kids played on the floor until five years ago, and the carpet kept the house a little quieter and allowed them to lay on the floor and play anywhere. I certainly miss those days....See MoreNew staircase over existing staircase
Comments (14)As Milly and Joseph said, you would have to open up a few places to see your framing details etc, I mean if you have experience and knowledge you would pretty much know how the framing is and what is being carried by what and you will have to make an opening, but existing joists, double up some existing, pretty much like you would make a pulldown downstairs, the concept is the same. Stairs can be built onsite depending on the staircase you want to have if it's just a boxed set of stairs between the 2 walls, it's very easy to make them onsite, again have to know carpentry. In any case, you will need an architect, a set of drawings, building permits, etc but this is pretty much what needs to be done just to give you an idea. If you think you can do it, nothing wrong with it to try or at least you can do what you can and hire someone to do what you can't do. I remember in my old house, a couple a few doors down build a 2 story addition, they had some family members helping them lift the walls, etc and they hired a contractor to frame the roof and do the sheeting. The guy I think owned a car parts store and the wife was a nurse. Little by little they did everything. Good luck....See Moreblitz1234
