Subway Tile Install - How Much Should I Pay a Contractor?
Comments (6)The 350.00 bid was way low. I did one tub about 3 weeks ago. A remodeling contractor called me and asked me for a price to do a tub for this woman. He wanted me to give HER the price directly, so she could save as much as possible. Apparently she'd recently separated from her husband, and was getting the house ready for sale, and it was recommended to her by her realtor to change out the tub, being that the one she had was stained and pretty ugly. Well, when they went to pull the first course of tile so they could pull the tub, the walls literally fell apart. In addition, she'd just found out she had cancer and was starting chemo and radiation (this all being told to me by the contractor who I'd worked with before and trusted, especially being he wasn't making anything off of it), and so was out of work because of feeling so sick from the treatment of the cancer, so I felt sorry for her and gave her a break. My normal price for a tub enclosure is 800.00, and that's about normal for up here. When I told her 350.00 (coincidentally), the contractor's head whipped around so fast I was afraid he'd given himself a good whiplash. I got downstairs and he kept asking me if I was sure. I finally told him this was my good deed for 2009-- don't question it. :-)...See MoreOff white or white subway tiles with Dove White Cabinets?
Comments (1)Since our kitchen is black & white, we went with white. Our cabinets are BM Gardenia, a warmer white than yours. Here's a shot or two. You need to figure out how much white you want in your new kitchen. Dove White is pretty bright, as is white subway tile. While I'd be good with that, some may find it too bright. You may be best served by picking up a dozen of each color tile and making a mock-up....See MoreI need pictures of White Subway tile
Comments (24)THANKS for this thread! Am done with the kitchen except for the tile. Like so many of you, I have creamy white cabinets, Barroca soapstone, and wood floors. I always pictured a fancy backsplash in my kitchen. However, I chose the beautiful La Cornue Cornufe 43" stove in Provence Blue. It is so pretty. I knew I wanted 2 x 8 subway tile for the kitchen but I always pictured having a cute little 1/2 inch stick trim all over and also some sort of decorative backsplash. However, the trim would probably go through ALL of my outlets and look all broken up. Any design on the backsplash would be upstaged by the stove. Now I see that just having plain subway tile is classy. Will probably do a pot rack and hang a few pretty things over the stove. It really helped me to see the different variations that everyone has posted-- crackle, gloss, matte, beveled edge, handmade slightly irregular tile vs. having more uniform size of tile, various types of grout, sizes of tile, etc. I have always liked the Mission Tile West (Pasadena, CA) Revival line; am looking at their 2 X 8. It's really flat, not so cushioned on the edges, and I can have really thin grout. It should look a lot like the Ann Sacks Heath photo except for more uniform size and a little glossier. Will try to post a photo when we are done!...See Moreshould i use white subway travetine tile in a herringbone pattern
Comments (10)I'm not a huge fan of a stone BS with granite, but that's my personal taste. I agree travertine can look very heavy. Having said that, and without your slab photo, I just suggested someone take a look at this marble: Here's the general marble description (copied from a Houzz photo answer:) Like Bookmark March 11, 2016 at 1:31PM PRO thebuilderdepot It is likely The Athens silver Cream is an Incredible product. It essentially a vein cut marble that gives an almost wood look appearance. If you ever visit the new Four Seasons in Orlando it covers it. Additionally the hotels love it because it is low maintenance it is a hard marble and matches easily from Threshold to Mosaic as you can see from our website. It is a very, very consistent Marble. However as it is new to the market, there is a lot of names for it and with different names comes different prices. Our recommendation as with all products. Order a sample. Order a sample online and compare. Before things ship ask for pictures. Cover yourself. It can also be called a White Oak Marble Limestone also a silver cloud and a variety of other names in the market place. The confusion of the name allows for some seriously unreasonable price fluctuations considering the price per block. It is very similar in appearance or a few other names by other companies, available for $7.45 a Square Foot in Honed and Polished. Live Link to Builders Depot Collection...See Moretartanmeup
