Whole house fan in attic gable?
Comments (14)All that advice and no mention of existing attic ventilation??? What gos in must go out. Translated means that unless you have far more square inches of attic vents than normal,a ceiling installed fan will perform poorly. You might even create health hazzards if the attic has insufficent exhust vents. The fan creates a high postive pressure in the attic and negative pressure inside living area. Air leaking back into living area will be heavly contaminated with dust, insulation particals and possibly worse. The conventional method of overcoming this is large movable shutters in one or more gables. Your origional plan of mounting fan in gable completly eleminates issues of pushing dirty attic air into living area....See MoreFront of house...Gable with a hip lip? or gable with eyebrows?
Comments (8)Here's how I'd change it. Notice now your front entry becomes the focal point of the house? I also lowered the stonework on the areas where it meets the siding as it looked off dividing the house almost in half like that. I personally would also get rid of the arched window. It adds nothing and competes with the lines of the house. Here's how it looks without the arch....See MorePainting exterior - what to do about this gable over garage?
Comments (5)Thank you, both! I am definitely considering replacing the garage doors (they're likely original to 1965 when the house was built so not in great shape) but that's a project for another time, unfortunately! I love those glass doors on your final photo. That second photo you uploaded, Beth, is similar to how our garage gable is: there are vertical strips of wood (looks kind of like shiplap) that don't show up well in the photo I uploaded. In that second photo, would you paint the gable the same color as the house, assuming the garage doors are a charcoal color? Here's a different color I considered for the dark trim but thought it was too light; maybe it's all right after all: Iron Ore (SW): I also considered Peppercorn, which is quite a bit lighter and might provide more contrast?...See MoreHelp with exterior detailing -- shed or gable dormer?
Comments (23)Thank you everyone for the insight and comments! This is my first time posting on this site and everyone has been very helpful and respectful, much appreciated. Our initial impression was that the roof on the left was very empty and the overall look appeared very "simple." But maybe that's what we should go with? I agree it does look fine without the dormer. However, we live in Myrtle Beach, SC and a lot of houses here seem to have a lot of dormers so figured adding one to the roof on the left would make it not so "simple" looking? The other thing is I really want to add a metal accent somewhere on the roof. Not sure why I'm enamored by it so much but I am. The problem with adding it to the dormer on the right side of the garage is you wouldn't really see it. @Woody Vaughan or Shaun Fogarty Yes, the rendering isn't exact. Our idea is to have the shed dormer running most of the way across the roof line like the example below: https://www.houseplans.com/plan/2889-square-feet-4-bedroom-3-5-bathroom-2-garage-farmhouse-traditional-craftsman-cottage-sp276687 We thought it added some architectural interest and made it look less simple. I will have to talk to my builder and see if we can make it functional in the living space to help bring in more light, didn't even think of that honestly. Thanks for the tip!...See MoreLila King
