Windows Design Dilemma

Bay? window treatments ..... neighbors creeping

Help! Our neighbor’s house behind us sits up higher than ours and they just cut down all of the trees in their backyard that we’re giving us privacy. Now they can see straight in.

What type of window treatments would you recommend for these two windows? One is in our living room area where we spend the most time and second is our informal dining room. Ignore the wreaths...

Would a straight curtain rod across the top look odd? I’m not sure here’s enough margin at the top of each window to install shades.

Maybe inside mounted shades on each window and drapery panels outside the bay and flanking it. You can have them close or simply be stationary.

Hi there, I don't currently have sheers on my bay window but thought I would post a picture to see if it helps you any with the hanging part. This isn't my ideal arrangement, always hated the way the connector is so prominent in the middle but I don't want a valance so I guess I have to live with it. This is a crummy photo that I just took with my cell phone in the early morning light, please forgive... hth!

You did a beautiful job on your remodeling! The kitchen is lovely. I really like the dragonfly fabric. I think you could use it again over the window seat. From a distance it reads as a solid. What I picture over your window seat is a scalloped valance hung from knobs. I don't know if I'm describing that right - I'll try to find a picture. I think if you vary the style a little but use the same fabric, it will look great. In terms of where to mount the valance, if you plan to use the window seat for seating at the table, I think the valance would feel awkward mounted outside. However, an outside mounted valance would make the seat more cozy for curling up with a book and a cup of tea (or glass of wine). As far as the other windows, I don't think you have to use the same treatment on all the windows b/c I think there is enough separation between the rooms. I have found wood blinds to be heavy and bulky to completely raise up. Have you thought about roman shades? You could use different (but coordinating) fabrics in each room or opt for a neutral or woven wood for all the windows.

@the Wiese Company: Yes, i looked at those since I just bought some for my upstairs office (blinds.com), which has the same new windows installed (albeit only half the width of the kitchen window). Unfortunately, with the trim around the window, the mounting bracket for the blinds are too thick to get a good looking inside mount. Do you have any recommendations on where to buy these with thinner mounting brackets? @luckyblueye: I’m thinking exactly of the reason that Anglophilia posted after you why I’m hesitant of curtains, even though they’re washable, but how often do I really want to wash curtains? @Anglophilia: I’m not a huge fan of awning. Especially for that part of the deck since it is pretty narrow (and not the main part we hang out on), so besides the sun/privacy it would have no use outside. But it’s a good thought otherwise! @Sara Sitardites: I like the idea of shutters, but not really the price tag... :) do you have a recommendation on where to buy them? Also, similar thing as with honeycomb blinds above, there is not much space within the window “box” for installation because of the trim. Did you run into a problem there? Thanks everybody!

Someone mentioned the clumping bamboo. We lived in LA and had an old ranch house torn down on the uphill property behind ours. They put up a 2-story house that looked like 3-stories from our rear patio that was downhill from them. We quickly removed some lemon trees we had planted in the back and replaced them with Bambusa Oldhamii. We bought 24" boxes that were already around 16 ft tall. It only took a couple of years, with some extra watering and feeding, and we quickly had a 40 ft hedge. We were able to completely block the new house. It is a clumping bamboo and can be controlled by cutting new shoots or the older taller ones.

I think you can top mount mini blinds or roman shades to the ceiling in this case to parallel near each window.. You might check with some various brands to see which ones could be mounted to the 'ceiling' of your bays, as they are. If you choose to soften the roman shades a bit, you might consider looking for those that have a sheer layer nearer the window, and the shade in one mechanism. Quite nice ...Also, don't forget the nice window films they make now. They cling, not stick, to the windows and some are opaque. You can see out but no one can see in during the daytime, while at night with interior lights on, you would want the roman shade or drape or mini blinds(I dislike them more every day now that I have had to have them for 20 years....too much lines to clutter the window and surface to clean!) You might prefer cafe ring mount curtain panels more than grommet if you do need a drape that is not of a heavy fabric.... I have had grommets on 2 pairs of windows for a while now & I note that(of course they are dry clean only)the metal rings? or rods?seem to be creating a powder residue on the fabric, from sliding open and shut several times each day I suppose. A bit perplexed by that at the moment...
