ANY large flowering hybrid - group 2 or 3 - can experience wilt, why I'm not sure. It is not the pruning group that determines susceptibility to wilt, but rather the type of clematis and how hybridized it is. It is a case of hybrid non-vigor rather than the more common opposite, as those clems closer to the species in parentage tend to be far less susceptible to establishment wilt. Patricia makes a good observation that her integrifolias and SAC don't seem to have this problem - they are species clematis and I have yet to see a species clematis suffer from establishment wilt. This may be why the info regarding the group 3's surfaced - there are a lot of species clems included in this group, including the viticellas and their hybrids. But the viticella hybrids are far less diluted in parentage than the LFH's. This is a very disheartening situation, specially to those new to clematis, as an apparently otherwise healthy vine, typically on the verge or just entering a bloom cycle, suddenly turns brown and dry virtually overnight. It sure looks dead, but take my word for it, it is NOT. Having worked in the nursery industry for a good number of years, my collection of clematis has grown considerably by returns of wilted, dead-looking vines from customers. I have taken these home, trimmed them up, repotted as necessary and nursed for a season or more and with very few exceptions all have turned into healthy, productive vines. One just needs some patience and the vines some TLC and they will almost always recover, perhaps the next season, sometimes in several seasons.

Sofa plus matching chair from that era doesn't show up that often. Except that I have a set from my MIL just now that I'm working on finding a home for, I really don't see sets too often. Couches alone, yes. In sagging condition, I agree with redhead on the sofa price, maybe add half again for the chair. But it depends on how fast you want to get rid of it - cheap enough, anything sells fast (try the free listings if you don't believe me). If not in a hurry, try a little higher, maybe $550, and you could put an OBO on it. But you may in the end get much less. As for stubbing toes, yes, what is it about these antiques that causes that? I do it on my other old couch too. For some reason they made the legs protrude a little. It does reduce the charm!! KarinL

I was thinking along the same lines, but I'm suggesting this is not a parlour chair, but what was in it's time called a reception or corner chair. Parlor chairs, especially early 20th, tend to be a bit more robust. The narrow back is often the defining point is this hair splitting answer, because it allowed the chair to be catty-whomped against a corner and the more delicate and diminuative size often led to its use in foyers and entry halls. I have found the height of their popularity in this configuration to be more late 1890s, but the decoration on the back certainly does not rule out early 20th and the urn does suggest neo-classical. Is it light weight for its size? Many massed produced ones around turn of the century were woods like light birch and stained mahogany. It's a nice chair.
