Maybe a dock, Rumex?

Unlike any dock I've ever come across. Looks more like something in the Asteraceae.

Hi floral. Figured it was you. To be honest, I really wasn't sure what it was and kind of wanted to just bump it up for someone like you. The red coloring on the leaves? I don't know, Asteraceae? I was away for a few days. What a difference a few days makes. I didn't recognize the place! But, what does one do, when there is nothing to ID? Get creative!

I'm surprised it hasn't flowered yet. May be this year? I don't tend to set much store by red leaf veins, especially in winter. Such things are highly variable even in the same species. But I'm pretty certain it isn't any Rumex. Iris, can you break off a leaf? Any sap? Any smell? Any idea what the root is like? Taproot? Thick roots? Thin roots?

I thought maybe Sonchus, but also wondered why it hadn't bloomed yet. The weather hasn't been kind to it! Is it growing in a sunny or shady spot Iris? Was it recently swamped with all the rain you had? You may as well post your other plant here now. You might get a quicker ID with that one. Maybe lol. :)

I would like be something for scale or a leaf measurement since it looks much smaller than the Rumex that grows here and leaf size is one of the ways to help narrow it down. And as floral suggested, knowing sap (milky or clear), scent of torn foliage, and type of root (tap or individual and fibrous or running like mint) will all help in narrowing it down.

It was just the crinkles in the leaves that made me say Rumex, but like I said, I didn't really have a clue so I was bumping it up. We can chase some other lead now.

I will go out with a ruler later. Didn’t notice any sap. It’s usually morning shade, but the tree providing that doesn’t have any leaves right now.

Iris, a couple pics of it when the sun is higher might help. That's if you have any sun. We haven't for 2 days lol.

Here are some more pictures. I thought maybe there would be a little pup I could dig out, but it’s all just the one plant. Tried to remove a bit of the soil to show the roots. No sap and no distinctive smell.

Iris, the roots don't have any smell?The roots remind me a little of horse radish, but I would think it would have bloomed by now. Very peculiar.

Definitely not horseradish, but I honestly don’t have any suggestions. Your investigations did eliminate a bunch of things.

Yes it has big leaves and it's not horse radish. I thought maybe something somewhat closely related because of the roots. I have just about eradicated a horse radish I planted years ago. A crucifer?

Maybe I will just leave it there and see if it ever flowers. It’s not really in the way of anything.
