Paint color trends?
Comments (29)One reason why people seem to follow color trends is that, once those trends have trickled down, furniture and accessories found in the stores in which most people shop are available only in those colors. Depending on your taste, it can make decorating easy or difficult. I recall trying to stage a bathroom in our former house. I'd long since painted the walls a kind of hyacinthy purple blue, with white wainscotting. Could not for the life of me find towels, rugs, mats or accessories in a darker shade of that color. I can't recall what the "in" colors were, but my many trips to stores were in vain. In the end, I went with navy blue, which worked beautifully. Same with another bathroom. It was papered in a document wallpaper, but with a twist on the original color. My paper was turquoise or teal perhaps, with accents of pale teal, old rose, blues; to stage the room, I wanted towels to match. It took forever to find what I needed because the color was not "in." I've long wanted some kind of hyacinth/purple room or at least accents in that color -- ever since buying my first book by John Saladino way back when. Completely fell in love with the color. I guess it's "in" now, but now, I'm not sure I have a room in which it will work. Don't laugh and try not to gag, but the room I'd love to use it in as a wall color has furniture and items in it in tobacco, gold, lacquer red, with an Azerbaijani carpet that has a wheat-colored background and rusty orange, gray, and navy designs. There is also an Armenian runner that has a lighter wheat background and designs in chocolate brown, dark gold, and red. I think the room's size and proportions (about 35 feet long and with low beamed ceilings -- and mostly northern light), the carpet's background color, and our gold chairs make it a no-go, but I love the idea of purple or lavender or lilac with reds and oranges. So instead I might redo a bedroom in a cognac color and paint the ceiling a pale, pale, pale lavender or hyacinth. well this ramble got way off topic! All I'd meant to say was that, from the few "better" shelter magazines I get or read, I think palimpsest is correct that the higher-end magazines show fewer trends than do the mid-range ones. They are also far less concerned with playing it safe. You don't necessarily see every room in beige, beige, and more beige with (oh how daring!) some blue accents thrown in for that little frisson....See MoreNew House (investment for sale) - what are the on trend paint colors?
Comments (2)Sounds like you have the updated space, so I'm sure most of the colors you mentioned will look fine. Revere Pewter is everywhere, but it looks too tan to me (in my house). I would grab some of the popular colors and bring samples to your space.. It all comes down to your space, lighting, and surrounding pieces. I did BM's Moonshine and love it!...See MoreDo you have questions about paint colors and trends?
Comments (20)I just painted my bedroom Van Deusen Blue and it is gorgeous. (Had a horrid experience with SW and as soon as I went back to Ben, all was well. You have the BEST paint.) I'm a better-than-average painter but no matter what I do - taping, straight-edge guide, slow freestyle - I cannot get a clean line. It's bad enough that I am considering painting the rest of my house white just to avoid the mess. Any tips? And any suggestions for a warm white just in case? Thanks!!!...See Moregray color on cabinets -- still nice, or boring?
Comments (42)Your kitchen came to mind in the wee hours this morning when sleep evaded me; I was pondering what I might do if this were my kitchen. I thought that I might do a tonal effect, painting the walls and pantry cabinets the same as each other, which would allow the pantries to blend in to their surroundings. Then, paint the island just a couple of shades darker, as in a couple of steps down on the paint card. Finally, I’d find some beautiful accessories that pick up on the blue of the range and place them in the room. If you want an earthy, rustic feel, then I’d look for some crockery with blue accents, such as a stoneware crock for utensils, or an extra large one for kindling by the fireplace. Like these. I’d put curtains up that have some blue in them, as well as some towels with the blue as accent colors. If you want a more refined look, there are many gorgeous blue and white porcelain pieces that would look lovely on your mantel. If you look at the home page of The Enchanted Home, you’ll see all of the colors of your kitchen incorporated into an outdoor seating area (the cherry cabinets are similar to the ceiling color.) Although obviously not a kitchen, it’s a great jumping off point for color inspiration. Just for fun, here is Enchanted Home’s Kitchen with a sprinkling of blue accents. See how her perimeter cabinets are not too far from her wall color? The cabinets are distinct, but not loudly different. It’s also a chance to see a dark island...which sounds like may not be for you, and that’s ok. : ) I hope you’ll post updates as you progress....See Morejerzeegirl (FL zone 9B)
