What is your experience with loropetalum?

I'd like to try to bonsai something this year and I'm considering a loropetalum. This species is appealing to me for several reasons. First off it flowers so that's a bonus. Second it's not tropical so I can keep it outside most of the year. And finally since it's a shrub I assume it will grow fairly quickly and is more forgiving if I make a mistake pruning. I've also considered non flowering species like elm (either american or chinese) or birch (not sure what species to try), but if I had my dream bonsai I'd want something with flowers. I know it wouldn't survive the winters here and would have to be kept in my garage, but other than that is any special care required? On a final note I'd like to say I've never done a bonsai before, so if you think this is too difficult for a beginner please tell me. I love this species but I'm willing to try something easier if you think it is best.
