Furniture Design Dilemma

HUGE living room, from scratch! But so many doors.

Hi all!

Just moved into my biggest solo space yet. I don't have very much furniture yet and want to design the space well - I think I may be here for a while. There is a huge amount of space, and lots of doorways! So having trouble figuring out what would be best.

I hope to have some comfortable sitting, movie watching, and game playing space for me and my partner, and guests (sometimes overnight). So a good sized coffee table and comfortable sitting area are both important. I also want an area to play music, and I need a small desk as well. I have essentially no furniture at this time, so we get to start from scratch!

Here is a screenshot of the layout with rough dimensions below.

Clockwise--

Left wall (with stationary heater): ~ 12'11"

Upper wall Left wall TO doorway: ~ 9'0"

Upper wall FROM doorway to Right wall: ~ 9'6"

Right wall: ~ 10'9"

Bottom wall with closet door: ~ 9'0"

Bottom wall with bedroom door, and entry: ~12'8"

And the little extra segment is just over 2'

Rough, so might not add up quite right.

Any ideas? I have light from South (left window) and North (right window). Light from East and West from the other rooms.

You'd probably get more responses if the dimensions were on the image. I'm having trouble following how you've described it.

In front of your main entrance(s), I would place a nice, warm toned rug to bring in some coziness. I would place a little table next to the door so that you have a place to put your keys, a candle, etc. On the left side of your space is where I see your living area looking best. I would mount the TV on the top wall of the floor plan, and put your comfy couch in front of it. Behind that setup, I would place the music area & desk you mentioned. I know that this is really basic, but I hope that it helps!

Also, when you get to decorating, I would highly recommend changing out the light switch plates in your space. It will give the room a very complete, tied together feel. :) https://www.bazarartandgifts.com has some great options. What I love about their products is that they are all handmade!!! Welcome to my world! I have a condo with lots of openings and very little light. Your rug needs to be big enough to be under your entire seating arrangement. A ceiling light does no one any favors in the living room. Much better is a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. If the kids need another surface for toys or games, get a round upholstered flat top ottoman with a large shallow tray for the top. To compensate for the lack of light, when you get your lights, get lamp bases that are mirrored. If you are in the market for accessories or wall decor, be sure to get lots of reflective surfaces (mirrored frames, mirrors, etc.). Also, stick to light and bright colors.

Thanks Emily. What about an orientation something like this? These are the dimensions of the Maiden Home 101", our record table console (behind the couch), the coffee table I'm planning to build and then two smaller chairs facing the couch. The rug shown is 10' by 13'. These aren't the colors that we would go for, but are just meant to show the scale. Would a set-up like this make sense? Yes, I understand mixing periods and styles (mission and mcm) is not for everyone. And maybe if we were truly starting from scratch we might not mix styles. But the truth it, the record console is one of the few pieces we have that is nice and we use it all the time. I also don't mind period-mixing as much as most people, especially if the wood tones work. Since all the tables would be true walnut I was hoping that would unify the look a bit. Thoughts? For the couch we were thinking a dark blue. I'm also eyeing these chairs and this rug. The room has yellow stained glass windows on either side of the fireplace.

How ironic : ) I just got off the phone with a happy camper "man client". Briefly: Lost his young wife a couple years ago, kids grown and out. Lots of life left to live . He and the Mrs. never had a designer, because ........."Someone will come in and it will be THEIR house, not OUR house" ...... In some circuitous route, (one of my clients and that client to his daughter ) - I get the call. Five months and a miracle later, in a climb through fire version of design with my upholsterer, his fabulous art, some incredible consignment, new hardwood flooring.....lighting, keep some get rid of this no, keep that, custom rugs, and UNEARTHING of some wonderful rugs he wasn't even using, kitchen refresh whirlwind? That man has found heaven at home. It's not just buy stuff. Put it here. It is make the things you DO buy .....sing. Let someone help you, tailor it TO you. You don't know what you're missing until that magic happens. You just have to find a person who listens to all you do not even say: ) Find someone not afraid to use the "No" word, and don't you be afraid to go just a bit outside your comfort zone with a good designer. Magic.

We have large patio doors snd use sliding panels. we got the sunshade ones in black that let 10% of light in. we love black because you can easily see through them in the day but they still absorb a lot of light and heat. you can get the panels in different widths; i think ours are 24” When they are open, the stack on one side of the track. super easy to open and close, they slide so easily on the track

It's difficult for me to get oriented based on the dimensions/description posted, but here's an arrangement that might work for you.

A standard size sofa and two swivel chairs in the main living area. The TV is to the left of the entry door. The desk is along the right wall. There may be room for a small games table and a couple of petite occasional chairs in this area as well.

Measure your space very carefully and then tape out the dimensions of furnishings on the floor to see what will fit best.

Nicole, thanks for the feedback I have only posted here once before! I don't have the software ability to put the measurements on there I'm sorry - are there websites or free software you'd recommend where I can do that? Thanks!

jack - Personally I just draw these things up on graph paper, no software needed!
