Why are my tomatoes looking like they aren't healthy already?
Comments (10)Okay yep that sounds like what it could be, I did fertilize once about a week and accidentally did a full dose instead of half for the first time. Good to hear it's not anything worse but just wanted to check. Daniel, I don't plan on mulching as I've never done it in the past in my raised bed. I just don't know how that would really work well with mulching and having to remove all the mulch in the winter and add more each spring. I've never thought about it and just use a fungicide to prevent disease. What would you recommend?...See MoreWhy are the leaves turning brown on my new peony?
Comments (5)Alex is right about over mulching and over watering causing issues. You certainly don't want to put several inches of degradable mulch directly over your peonies. Some kind of wood based or pine straw mulch will work better to keep the roots cooler, though. Just make sure as has been stated above to keep the mulch back from the stems. I live in CO, we're considered high desert, and only water during the hottest parts of the summer, maybe once a week. A lot of my peonies look similar to yours right now! The ones planted in the last year typically go dormant earlier than those fully established. Once the leaves are mostly brown just cut the stem down to a few inches and leave it for the year. You won't cause your peony to put out new growth by watering this late in the summer but you certainly can cause root rot by overwatering. Peonies are perennial, they go dormant every late summer/fall. It's nerve racking to watch them wither the first few years--I still worry about mine every year even though I've been growing them now for decades! If you think of their habit more as a bulb that is perennial in your zone it's easier to understand their growth cycle. If you are a gardener that fertilizes you can use an organic bulb fertilizer on your peonies. I'm not an expert on fertilizing but have used BulbTone on mine the last few springs and falls based on another respected peony grower's recommendation and I have had better and more blooms because of it. I think it's Hollingsworth's updates that recommended doing the same immediately after flowering as well. That's another thing I'd recommend--go onto the big online grower's sites--several have blogs that you can follow and almost all have lots of peony growing recommendations. You can learn a lot by reading all of that info--I typically go back through all of them during the winter when we're under several inches of snow and I'm missing summer! There is some conflicting information out there but everyone is the same on the basics for growing. If you're unsure about a recommendation it's typically best to consult experienced gardeners in your immediate area as things that work for me here in CO wouldn't work for someone further south with a lot of humidity, etc......See MoreMy plan on growing hinoki from cuttings-good or bad?
Comments (77)'Bill, I guess we are both beginners in propagating conifers. My god I didn't know it was this hard to grow conifers...' We all have to start somewhere. Don't give up. I think the methods Dave O. gave to us really simplifies things. Next time, I'm going to do mine that way. It will cut down on a lot of the work. This time, I spent a lot of time checking temperatures and that's because I didn't have a thermostat on my mat, so I used a timer and had to continually check and change the on/off cycles to coincide with what ambient temps were doing. The colder it got outside, the more heat it took to keep 70d bottom heat (remember I'm zone 3 brrr) :) . Next year I definitely will have a thermostat. I also spent time buying/configuring lighting, next year, I won't have to fool with that. Built myself an insulated rooting chamber, should work just fine 'as is' next year. And the reading. I must've read certain articles 10x before it totally sunk in, then you have to sort through all the contradictory and incorrect information found on the internet. So yeah, first time around is always the hardest. Keep us posted on what you do next time, I find it interesting. I still don't know how my stuff will turn out but I'll keep posting on my "Rooting Tsuga Canadensis" thread as things develop. Good Luck! :-) Hey Dave! When you finally set your tank outside in the shade, is it still sealed? Or do you have it vented by then?...See Moregolden hinoki cypress turning brown
Comments (4)note the pattern .. interior browning and loss of interior needles is annual and NORMAL ... all conifers shed needles within 3 years... but often you dont see such as the canopy extends and hides such .... it is increased by drought.. transplant [especially of larger conifers] .. removal of shade trees... etc ... to be agreeable.. my first thought was sunburn ... and i wonder how bad your summer .. or even last winter was .. or if its a recent addition to your garden... say the last 2 years ... more info if you want us to hone in... including big city location ... i see now.. you say its less than one year old... there you go.. a large transplant ... no lets fit in whats happened weather wise.. since then ... depending on where you are... winter sun reflected off that big rock might also be adding to it ... especially if you notice less damage on the side opposite ... bottom line.. as long as current growth is looking good... your tree should survive .. all thats left is what it will look like ... ken...See MoreUser
