Pics of our FR black painted brick fireplace (long post)
Comments (51)I looked again at the entire room, last comment I was focusing on the fireplace, as I had never seen a black fireplace before and it was so bold. I love it. You did an amazing job with the light colour flooring, the black window blind, black couch, light walls, pillows match your flooring, everything gels beautifully. You really changed the look of the room completely. It is very upscale and modern in comparison to the before pic. It is budget friendly too. Also love your kitty, lol!...See MoreIf painted brick fireplace, did you also paint the floor area?
Comments (2)If you paint the hearth, choose a color that tones in with or matches the floor. I painted (color washed, really) the brick fireplace wall in our previous basement with the neutral off-white wall color. I took some hideous vinyl tile off the concrete floor, painted the floor chocolate brown, and painted the raised brick hearth black...I used flat black for the first coat, and then went over only the surface of the bricks with satin finish...looked more natural to have flat finish on the mortar. I often recommend that technique for any color of painted brick....See Moreshould I paint this brick/paneled fireplace????
Comments (47)purrus - very very very nice! I also like all the neutral tones in the room. well done. scoutfinch - I first primed with BM All Purpose Fresh Start primer and then 2 coats of BM Aura 'Black' in eggshell finish. I don't use my F/P so heat-resistant issues didn't cross my mind, but something for you to check on if you do. Black heat-resistant paint should be easy to get, because it is available for gas grills. Personally, I don't think it would be necessary, but who knows. jamies - it is not hard at all to add a little faux texture to your bricks yourself. I think you would get a big improvement. you can go lighter or darker or even stay close to the existing color. You can just do a touch or go heavy. Its so flexible and so easy. Just be very random (in a controlled sort of way). Maintain the grout lines. I think in my link above, I described how I did mine....See MoreHow do I get soot off of brick around fireplace?
Comments (4)You can mask off anything beforehand with builders' paper, plastic bags, tape, layers of newspaper, etc. I'd try strong soap and water first on a test area. Use three kinds of brushes: stiff short bristles, medium stiff long bristles and a couple of old toothbrushes. However if that doesn't work, head to a fireplace shop and buy a hearth-cleaning product there. There are some fierce ones, based on lye. Use gloves and ventilation (if spraying it on, use a mask and goggles). Test in a hidden spot first to make sure it doesn't harm your mortar. Be patient, it's a pain to do. Don't saturate up too-large an area at once, even if it says to let it "work" for a bit. It will be time consuming and you don't want the stuff to dry out while you're working on another area. Have lots of paper towels on hand, and a bucket (not paper or plastic bag) to put the used ones in. They can easily mar other surfaces if they are wet after use. HTH L....See MoreSushistew
