How do I turn off my well water?
Comments (8)Opening a faucet to relieve the pressure seems like overkill. The size of a possible flood, with the well pump off, is less than you could have if a leak developed on a normal day, when the well pump is on and you're out of the house from morning to night. That's assuming you've got a normal pressure tank, not something unusual like a big tank sitting on your roof. If you've got an "instant hot" water dispenser, unplug that too. One more thing: If your well is in a well pit, and the sump pump is fed by the same circuit as the well pump, then don't shut it off, or water might rise in the pit and seep into the well head. In that case, just close the main shutoff valve....See Morevacationing should I shut off water at the street?
Comments (5)I would shut water off but leave hvac set a 55 or higher to prevent pipes freezing unless house is winterized. Be sure to turn water heater to pilot to prevent boiling tank dry. When you return from vacation, expect some facuet drips and inspect water heater drain to make sure it isn't leaking....See Moreturning the hot water tank off

Such appliances normally turn on at full power during start up, as it gives you hot water faster, and then reduce power when they reach the required setting. Anyway, once it does heat up your water may be too hot and need mixing with cold to get the ideal temperature. Unfortunatly, the hotter water becomes the less readily energy from the element transfers in to it, thus the efficiency goes down with increasing temperature. It's preferable to heat a large volume of water to the right temperature than try to super-heat a little water and mix it with cold. You may find that you're a good distance from the water heater and pipe insulation improves the speed at which hot water reaches you. I have a normal tank heater, so the time it takes for hot water to reach me is mostly pushing standing cold water out the pipes and the heat lost by the pipes themselves. Thus your delay may not even be caused by the water heater. Insulation did improve the hot water in my house, and it has allowed me to turn the temperature down a bit now that I'm not passing it through a long metal pipe before using it....See MoreNeed to turn off water valves in laundry room if going on vacation?
Comments (25)I personally know two people who had flood disasters because of ruptured toilet fill hoses. One of them happened while they were out for dinner, not even on vacation. Afterward, one of them installed a Leak Defense system at their insurance company's expense. I decided to learn from this, and install one in my house. For each of the two modes, Home and Away, you set a threshold at which flow is detected, and how long water is allowed to flow before the system alarms and shuts off the water. It can detect very small flows, down to something like a drop per second. Obviously it can't prevent damage 100%, since it has to allow some flow, particularly while you're home. But it's better than letting it flow for an unlimited time. If I remember to put it in Away mode when I leave the house, it'll shut off after 3 minutes of flow. And when I'm home, I can tell when water is flowing, and look around for the cause if I think it shouldn't be. Edit: It also has optional point-of-leak detectors that detect moisture where it shouldn't be, and shut the water right away. I still shut off the water completely when we're away, usually by turning off the well pump so the outside hydrants are off too....See Moregraywings123
