Copper tubing vs. PEX

My plumber just installed all new plumbing for my shower with PEX. However, the Delta instructions clearly state NOT to use PEX for the straight drop to the bathtub spout. the plumber chose to do about 12" of PEX, .joined to an approximately 8" length of copper pipe that joins to the bathtub fixture.

Thoughts on this approach? Delta was very clear - do NOT use PEX. Bold text and everything.

Yes, I paid him. And, I didn't read the instructions until after I paid him. I assumed (silly me) he would read the instructions. I mean - that's why I hired him - so that he would do the work. I wouldn't think I should have to read everything, know exactly how to assemble everything. Right?

On our remodel I told our builder I wanted copper on all drinking water sources. I rationalized that I spend enough time in places where I can't drink the water and I wasn't doing that in my own house. We are using PEX for the baseboard heat, PVC for waste lines, and copper for all supply. I know that PEX has its benefits but it hasn't been around long enough that I'm drinking from it (even though I drank from a green garden hose as a kid, I know it's somewhat irrational but it's my money). I don't think your choice will affect resale UNLESS someone finds out that it does leach chemicals and then it will be like Chinese drywall and lead paint - a big deal for some people but not all.

Since the days that we dug wells by hand in my area, and I helped on some of those, observation tells me that the analysis of the water in a particular well can change over time. And most of the well water in my area does damage copper pipe. For that reason, I used only stainless steel pump and fittings and polyethylene pipe in my well. And avoided copper and brass as much as possible in the above-ground fittings. No regrets. Now 6 years with no repairs and hoping for at least 15 more years of trouble-free service.

Pex has a slightly smaller diameter than copper, which is why there is this requirement. The valves are designed so that at maximum pressure, all of the water will flow to the tub spout.

If pex is used, then it's possible that there will be slightly more pressure than the pex will be able to handle and that extra pressure could result in the extra water getting diverted up to the shower head.

So the shower head may drip while you are filling the tub.

That's the ramifications of your installation. It may not be an issue in your particular case since your specific pressure may not cause this effect, but it's in the instructions because it could possibly happen.

Thank you so much, Greg! That really helps to alleviate my anxiety if this can't get fixed. It MAY result in shower head dripping, but only while tub is being filled. That, I can live with.

Easy fix. Show the instructions to the plumbing inspector. The install will fail inspection. The plumber then has to fix it.
