Due to stomach acidity, dogs and cats are not normally susceptible to Salmonella or many of the other food poisoning agents that effect us, so the pet food companies don't have to try to control them. Now with the new focus on pet food safety, I expect we'll see stricter rules. It's always been a bad idea to handle dog food without washing your hands after, because of the salmonella danger. From a dog who carries the bacteria (about 36% of all dogs & 17% of domestic cats) you can be exposed by saliva or feces. Your DH needs to be very careful. 30+ years ago when I was in college we did testing on this same subject so I've been aware of it for a long time. I'm cautious with pet food and, of course, with their droppings. But I foolishly still kiss my dogs!

Thanks Katyroadpink for the update. I guess we had all hoped that this nightmare was calming down. I feed only very high quality (and expensive) food to my three children with fur. I always look a the dollar amount when purchasing it, sometimes thinking that my dogs eat better than some people in developing countries do. Yes, I also cook for them, I enjoy it! I have had some peace of mind knowing that none of what I am feeding as even come close to being an issue. I hope the dog god keeps it that way! Thanks again, SG

It does make you wonder what to do these days. With the e-coli in hamburger I now buy something ground at the store or meat market and freeze it for a week or so. Let someone else get sick first! And I usually buy a lot of pet food so it sits for a while and I always buy a premium to super-premium food in which I have a lot of confidence. That doesn't mean that problems can't happen though. And in fairness, Nutro is a pretty good, middle-of-the-road food maker. I tried it a couple times but I get better food for the same or less so I don't use it anymore. Again, in fairness, this was a mistake. It's sad though that they don't give some info on what the possible affects of too much vitamins can be. Often, with water-soluble vitamins, it'll just leave unused. Not sure how it works in this case though. Thanks for the heads up. I'll pass it along to people who might be affected.

Well like I said it really depends on what type of meat you get and how it's prepared. If you get the fine ground ones like myself and get proteins like chicken and turkey maybe $45-$60 a month? You will also either need to brush their teeth or make sure they get bones to chew on for dental health. And if you start them on raw it either needs to be all raw or none. Feeding them raw and commercial pet food will mess with their tummies. I like to tell people about raw but I also tell them that doing some research is important. Take your time and look up the info. Their are a lot of groups online with plenty of information and a lot of websites that have people that will answer your question or point you in the right direction.
