What Style House Do I have?
Comments (6)Martha, see the other post of same name above - you can have really strong arts & crafts elements but without being a full blown "craftsman" or bungalow." Look up prairie style - which is kind of a "missing link" between arts and crafts and the later ranch style of the 40s/50s/60s. But then the windows kinda give it a cottagey flair too! Can we just say it looks like an exceptionally beautiful and well built house of the early 1900s/1920s era? BTW, I would not discount pine as a "lesser" wood. In 1920 they would have still been using old growth pine/fir - taken from the original forests which once blanketed much of eastern portion of this continent. That stuff is hard as nails and nothing like the horrible splintery farmed wood of today. It may have been considered "lesser" back in the day, but now there is appreciation for it - if youve ever priced vintage wood in salvage store. If its been painted , then the ship has sailed and you would have splecial dispensation from the old house gods to paint again (heheh). If the first layer is shellac, it may be possible to strip it but may or may not be worth the effort. Sometimes they used lesser quality paint grade pine upstairs, and the more beautiful expensive cuts of wood downstairs to be shellacked and stained....See MoreWhat style house do I have?
Comments (2)I would say that it is " Builder's Choice". The exterior does not have any impact on your interior choices. If you have questions about how to go about the interior decorating you can post them here or on the Home Decirating forum....See MoreWhat style house is this?
Comments (6)Like the look of the eclectic house but likely would consider removing the shutters altogether or replacing them with wider functional ones as has been suggested already. https://www.google.com/search?biw=1328&bih=617&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=7UzcXcqbGYjP0PEPnrGDqAQ&q=terrace+barely+sloped+front+yard+with+one+retaining+wall&oq=terrace+barely+sloped+front+yard+with+one+retaining+wall&gs_l=img.3...141610.154193..154402...3.0..0.349.3587.27j4j1j2......0....1..gws-wiz-img.......0i7i5i30.P4f8a4maoJw&ved=0ahUKEwiKxsamrIbmAhWIJzQIHZ7YAEUQ4dUDCAY&uact=5#imgrc=yq9qrkdFrKVK4M:&spf=1574718861226 IF you make it yours, You might consider painting the white garage doors and the white horizontal siding on both sides of the approach to the front entry door the same gray as is in the brick. Landscaping is the one thing it needs first to prevent erosion. Before you resow the grass, you might consider making the front yard a bit more level by adding a single very short retaining wall and adding soil above it from the side yard below it -- thus leveling the side yard a bit as well. Keep enough slope for water drainage. https://www.google.com/search?biw=1328&bih=617&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=7UzcXcqbGYjP0PEPnrGDqAQ&q=terrace+barely+sloped+front+yard+with+one+retaining+wall&oq=terrace+barely+sloped+front+yard+with+one+retaining+wall&gs_l=img.3...141610.154193..154402...3.0..0.349.3587.27j4j1j2......0....1..gws-wiz-img.......0i7i5i30.P4f8a4maoJw&ved=0ahUKEwiKxsamrIbmAhWIJzQIHZ7YAEUQ4dUDCAY&uact=5#imgrc=yq9qrkdFrKVK4M:&spf=1574718861226...See MoreColumn and Railing Help (also what style house is this?)
Comments (8)I am far from an expert. I have seen similar houses, all quite old, but I don't think they have earned any designation as a particular style. I do think that more substantial pillars and railings would balance the overhang and garage roof. Go more vintage looking but definitely not ornate. Landscaping will help, as would replacing the lower level light fixtures with ones a bit larger. I even think that this house could wear shutters well, but it doesn't look like there really is enough room between window and lights for them. So instead, I would look at adding more substantial trim around the doors and windows. If you have the money and are willing, I also would replace the doors. These (with the small half moon windows) just don't look right....See Morelefty47
