evergreen flowering shrub for full sun?
Comments (9)Thank you both! Sorry, i forgot to mention height -- I'm looking for something around 6' high. well anything in the 4-8' range would be OK, so that i have some variation in height. Esh, thanks for the dwarf myrtle suggestion, i do like their leaves a lot so i could add some as a nice complement to other flowering shrubs. Killerv, we have so many Indian Hawthornes planted outside my work building that I fear I may feel like I'm at work if i plant them at home! They certainly do really well in sun though. Lowes carries Abelia Canyon Creek (as does Growers Outlet) so i might go with that, a dwarf wax myrtle, and perhaps the viburnum tinus since that has nice flower clusters. These evergreens would be mixed with some deciduous shrubs that I've already planted (cotinus, fothergilla, callicarpa, viburnum plicatum). I'm also thinking about Enkianthus campanulatus (but can only find it mail-order) -- is anyone growing that? Any other suggestions welcome, I have a lot of space!...See MoreSeeking *native* (TN), evergreen, low-maint,. and inexpensive GC
Comments (2)Check out Pachysandra procumbens (Allegheny spurge) and Chrysogonum virginianum. Not sure if they are reliably evergreen though. It kind of depends of how harsh of a winter you have....See MoreNative Evergreen Groundcover for under pines
Comments (2)Ed, another one you might try to work with is Cornus canadensis-bunchberry. If you're not familiar with this one, don't let the Cornus part fool you-this is a very low-growing groundcover type of dogwood, and quite beautiful to boot. I'm not 100% sure of its being evergreen. I've seen this thing all my life but for whatever reason, that aspect escapes me. I suppose it's generally covered with snow in these parts-to say the very least this year! Has nice bright red fruit as well. Another one I thought of is Lycopodium-"ground pine". There are a number of species of this grouping of club mosses. Evergreen but non-fruiting of course, being a non-flowering plant. Nice to look at but I'm not sure of availability. +oM...See MoreISO native narrow evergreen bush/tree
Comments (3)You are limiting yourself unnecessarily if you are looking only for natives that are both narrow and evergreen. About the only one I can think of is a selection of any one of a number of cultivars of American arborvitae, Thuja occidentalis. And these not all that happy in so much shade. Other possibility might be a Rhododendron, but a more suitable choice would be one of the hybrids rather than a native species. Is there an overriding need to stick solely to natives? A great many non-native plants are extremely well suited to gardens without upsetting the ecological balance :-)) And if one really wants to stick to pure natives, then they should be limited to plants that only grow naturally in one's immediate area - an even more limited selection....See Morecarol23_gw
