Paint Design Dilemma Exterior

In need of curb appeal

We have just purchased a renovation project and the house needs some curb appeal. It’s a white stucco house with forest green trim also with forest green eavestrough and fascia. We don’t have a huge budget for the exterior but would love some ideas on how to update the look. Any help would be appreciated. Any ideas on how to update the arches as well....not a big fan of those either.

In the garage door (pic is hard to see) if those are arched as well, sometimes those panels can be replaced. You may be able to change the two "arched" components with a rectangular glass such as in the center.

Not sure if it's a similar situation in the front door, but the same applies... sometimes just the panel can be changed out. This would eliminate some of the arches, leaving you just the front picture window and the curves on the garage door frame, which I would leave at the moment. Embrace these arches. They will grow on you.

As to trim/landscaping, clearer photos would be helpful.

I don't think I would interfere with the Arches. They are a part of the style. It looks to me like there's too much contrast in color. Change that stark ite to a creamy color, and maybe change the trim to a terracotta. And as Mimi says, break up that expanse of lawn with some Landscaping. It's an adorable house!

The shrubs to the right are drift roses, so they will be blooming soon and through the fall. The bushes mirror those on the other side, with the exception of the Kaleidoscope Abelia since that bed to the right is smaller and can't accommodate them. There are 3 recessed cans for porch lighting and landscape lights that light up the columns. We don't lack for light, but not a pendant or any wall fixtures there --just the cans.

Hi Meg! I actually dont mind the posts, however, I think they need to be restained to a darker, more richer color brown, but first I (personally,) would beat them up a little bit to give them more of a rustic type of a feel. So they have dents and gouges in them so they look like authentic wooden beams. Another thing that stuck out is that the exterior is very long (mines the same way!) and theres nothing visual bringing your eyesite upwards. (I know you mentioned redoing your landscaping next year so my suggestion on that would be to add some kind of a (smaller) tree planted to the right of the larger window thats next to your front door. I think that would add alot to that area and fill it in nicely and help blend things in more. 😉 Thank u for this post btw! You gave me inspiration to get the same kind of advice on my own ranch home! My ranch is SO boring!! It was a smaller ranch and someone added an addition at one point. Now its long and boring and is in desperate need of , well, a lot! .. lol I‘m going to post a picture of mine tomorrow and ask for advice. Thanks again & best of luck with your home.

i agree with most comments especially on how to treat the doors. Imagine looking at the picture you showed us & the ski door is same color as house - it’s gone! I like your idea of adding lighting to entry especially around the front door not storage door. If you want to add interest to that side wall with no symmetry maybe think about adding a locally interesting wall ornament that’s weather proof. Iron art? Snowboarder? Per @Olychick comments,be sure to hang it above the snow line!

For the backyard, instead of expanding the patio, try creating a separate "room". You don't need to add a building, just add a path to a place. If the room is in between places or heavily used you should pave or gravel it. If it's a private place to relax go with lawn. If you need privacy the quickest way is a fence or trellis. You can also set off a room with low shrubs or flowers, or rock work or sculpture.

I echo the removal of all arched windows save for the large window, those changes will have an immediate impact. New body color is dependent on roof color (?). Do this project in steps...and take your time. With a change in landscaping (specifically, the ill-placed row of shrubs flanking the drive are not in keeping with the home's strong horizontal line) this home could be terrific.

I love the arches, they make your home stand out, and look like they belong there. I do agree, you could improve the landscaping. It is a very cute house. enjoy it and try not to make it something it isnt.
