Master bathroom tub

My master bathroom will have a separate shower and tub. I'm told that a drop in is much more popular than an undermount tub. I was leaning towards an undermount though. I like the flush look of the granite and also may be more comfortable to sit on the ledge when it is an undermount. Can there be more leakage problems when it is an undermount? Is there something I'm not considering?

Also, is 24" height to high for a tub? It seems high to me but the tub I was considering only comes in that height.

Any input is appreciated!

If you are using stone or quartz, undermount means the fabricator will need to polish the edge of the hole - drop in does not need this step. More money. If using tile, you will have a very busy edge trying to follow the shape of the tub with bullnose tiles - not a good look.

24" is pretty tall for a tub. Mock it up on your current tub and see how you like stepping into it.

Thanks for your response.

I would be using tile. So it would be a cleaner, nicer look then doing drop in?

NaRo - i know it has been a few years but i am redoing my master bath and saw your thread because of the york tub we want to put in. I also want to do a corner shower very similar to what you have. Can you post or send me a picture of it to the ceiling and the measurements, including shower door width? Thank you! The master bath looks great!

I wouldn't do anything behind the tub, as much as I love art in its different forms etc. I like visual proportions as they are now-chandelier, window, tub with its faucet. I wouldn't want to interfere with it too much. Your window is your art...in a sense one really looks at it. I'd do someting both beautiful and very useful next to the tub-like a side table where one keep soaps/brushes (yeah..they should look good))..maybe a cool thing-y for towels (it's very hard, or else I found it to be real hard, to find something cool and free standing and narrow enough, especially new..new costs some abnormal amount of money. I personally decided to manage without..)..plants are always a good idea, to me at least One can do a shelf I suppose..but it won't stay empty, right? If you really prefer to, I'd go for smth not full length..assymetrical..I wouldn't want to repeat the window lines.

Do a broad search of freestanding tubs. There are models that are 21-22" high. The typical deck mount or undermount tub will also be deep - 20" or more and you have a wider " ledge " you have to step over/across that a lot of people find troublesome. Good luck!

My tub was from 1999 so way worse! Yours does not look bad! I updated 3 years ago to a free standing tub and love it! You will have to replace flooring though since it will show on a free standing tub. You will also have to fix the walls where the tile was. We did a total master bath remodel. My recommendations would be to go to a large bath/kitchen showroom and sit in some tubs to see how you like them! Also to figure out the size you want. Most run very large. I am only 5'2" so didn't want a 7' tub where I would just float around in! Mine is 5 feet I think and its perfect.

Google "Undermount tub in tile" and take a look at how they treat the edge of where the tile stops. Some people use a bull-nose tile made for edging, but make a ton of little cut pieces to follow the curves, others will actually cut and grind the tile edge to form a bull nose. Either way not as clean as a solid slab product or a drop tub placed over tile. Just my opinion...
