Getting married starting off in debt
Comments (19)Depending on the type of student loans you have, the interest the loans accrue becomes a tax credit for you. Not a deduction, but an actual credit. When I was first starting out, this was very helpful, as I financed nearly $13,000 with Stafford Loans. My interest payments were around $700 the first few years, which was cash in my pocket every month (I opted for lower tax withholding, if you get money back then you are paying too much to begin with.) I also had a car loan and credit card leaving school, and I found the best way was to focus on the credit cards. Credit-rating wise, the car is a secured debt, and does not negatively impact your credit score the way the cards do (unless of course you pay late!). My biggest mistake, however, in my zeal to pay down debt, was leaving myself cash poor. Use the zero interest time to build up some cash, that way you have a buffer. But for sure lose those balances (payoff/transfer) if they have high interest at the end of the term. I hope your future Mrs. is working equally hard to dissolve her debts -- backing out the car and school loans, your personal debts are lower. Are her parents paying for her schooling, or will that be another consideration once she finishes school? I wouldn't stress too much, have a game plan that you two can agree on and stick with it -- before finances get more complicated (businesses, kids, homes!). Whatever you decide, now is the time to make the decisions, together. That whole "what's your's is mine" bit applies to debts, too :) Good luck (and keep wishing for green wedding presents)....See Moreno room for bedside table - lighting?
Comments (15)Thanks for the ideas everyone! eliza, unfortunately I donÂt know how to tell you to post a picture. Can you describe the bookshelf (dimensions, is it at the head of the bed or along the side, etc.)? Does your daughter bump her head into it? valinsv, I agree about liking the "daybed" kind of feel of the bed against the wall. We too sit back against the wall while weÂre reading. 3dgrad, I do have a swing arm wall lamp, but it's pretty big and seems like it would stick out too far from the wall into the bed space. I think I still have some smaller wall sconces that I might try. I hope I still have themÂthey were in the "going to Goodwill" box at one point. Now that you mention it, I have seen a little folding shelf thing like you described, but forgot all about it. Thanks for the idea. budge, there is a headboard, so a clamp lamp might be what we end up with. Does yours get knocked around? ThatÂs kind of my dilemma, a clamp lamp will be down near pillows and such, but a wall-mounted lamp will be up where the light might glare down too much. I did see a canvas "nursery organizer" which is like a hanging shoe bag but with wider pockets at Babies R Us. I was thinking about that because itÂs soft and would hold a few books and maybe even a water bottle. I might have to do some surgery on it though to make it more horizontally-oriented than vertically....See MoreHelp with bedside tables and general master bedroom decor
Comments (7)I’d get rid of the euros altogether, they look too tall for the headboard anyway. Can you put the bed on the wall to the right without knocking your head getting into bed? It looks like anyone on the right side currently would already be getting beaned by the ceiling if it’s that low? Can’t tell from the picture but it looks like the other wall is wider, and would give you enough space for larger night tables. Definitely the ones you have now are not the right size or height. This would give you space for large lamps as well, or sconces on adjustable arms above the tables if you prefer them. I’d also replace the comforter/duvet cover if possible to one with some color other than the beige of the walls and rug. Or a print that has some beige in it to tie it together. Right now everything is close to the same color and there is no contrast between light and dark items, so it all kind of runs together. Or a more colorful rug instead....See Morehelp me update these bedside tables!
Comments (11)they're nice, but would look better painted. next time tell him to use better wood if he wants them to stay natural! what you could do make both of you happy, redo the top in a darker stain like a warm walnut, and paint the lower portion. try General Finishes Milk Paint (it's an acrylic enamel). very easy to paint with. make sure to prep the wood prior to painting. https://generalfinishes.com/all-colors# do a nice glass or acrylic handle or knobs. and if you're really feeling creative...See MoreUser
