Birdhouse Usage

I was just given this older home built birdhouse by the new owner of a house whose backyard it was in. It was on poles about 9 feet high. I am trying to figure out what kinds of birds it was built to house (though now it looks like squirrels may have been in it after
making the holes wider)) before I fix it up. I am 60 miles west of Chicago. Thanks!

You stop, you lean in, you peer at every little item... it makes you smile! I'd love to try one or two myself... like if I get another life after this one! Our local Hm Depot has a really tiny groundcover called 'Brass Button' that would look great in there, it can't be more than 1/8 inch high! Comments (27)Every gardener is unique, so like hopflower said, because it is mine is a good answer. Mine is unique because in our neighborhood there are not a lot of flower gardeners. I have roses, daylilies, assorted other perenniels, and bunches of annuals. I'm aiming for a charming cottage look...and I'm getting there, slowly. Most of the neighbors have grass and weedy shrub beds. I get tickled every spring when the neighbor to the left says 'don't tell me its time for yard work again' when he sees me outside pruning something in late winter. I always reply 'its time to play in the dirt.' What he sees as a chore, I see as a joy. I have a small 'secret' garden that is peaceful, pretty, and private (or getting there...grow, shrubs, grow!) That is one of my major splurges and makes a nice destination during a stroll in the yard. We also do veggies. The best thing? The purple porch swing. It gets a smile every time. Comments (151)Wow, Jay, this is the big step. Has Mrs. Jay been to the new house yet? It sounds like you two will be camping out for a while in that basement. Wiring always amazes me. I remember the first time I saw the "electrical room" for one of those 6000 sq ft monstrosities that people thought that they needed to build in the early 2000's. I was astounded that a HOUSE needed an electrical room, but it was completely full of wiring and boxes. It had hundreds of recessed lights, plus every bell and whistle. I think that house's wiring could circle the earth, go all the way to the moon, or some other outlandish feat. Since it was before home-use LEDs, I bet their electrical bills ran over $500/month without air conditioning. Are you going to make use of LEDs? We put in Cree 6" recessed lights in the kitchen and for the smaller pot lights I found LED bulbs for the 4" pots. Both are supposed to last 10 years. They don't just blink out when they die, but their brightness will fade, so it will be hard to tell if our aging eyes are dimming or if the LEDs are. So far, we really like the lights, but they are also our first recessed lights, too. Do you have to wait until the drywall is up to turn on the electric power to the house? Is drywall the next step once plumbing and electric are done? Are you doing drywall all by yourself? How long do you think it will take? Once walls are up, then I can imagine exactly how the rest of the process will go. And here you and Mrs. Jay are, culling, packing, cleaning, and getting ready to sell a house that you have already emotionally left. Comments (55)My black 4 cup Mr. Coffee coffemaker, my 4 slice ss looking toaster, and my little Emerson 900watt microwave purchased at Target. My food processer and Kitchenaid stand mixer are in my pantr. I do have a GE Monogram Advantium oven built-in, but I just really feel a microwave on the counter is the safest. After my kitchen was gutted, my husband put my old microwave on a little shelf on the floor that would have been about the same height as if it were built into an island. I hated it at that height. I also feel with kids, you really need a counter right outside the micro door. I suggest anyone who is considering an undercounter microwave, uses their current microwave at the new level before making that decision....See More
